Frozen black screen with a cursor after boot

Hello forum.

I have a problem booting into Opensuse Leap 42.1.

After the Grub screen it shows the normal booting messages then it shows a new and non-familiar message: “Starting postfix mail transport agent”, it never showed that message before. After that I get the green loading screen and finally a black screen with a frozen cursor.

I haven’t booted into Opensuse in a while so I don’t remember if I installed any updates or not prior to this error.

Any ideas to what might be the problem?

Video card and driver ??

Sorry for forgetting to add pertinent system data.

Kernel: Linux 4.1.34-33-default
Video Card: NVIDIA 9800 GT
Driver: NVIDIA G03

I was able to boot into Opensuse by setting the option nomodeset.

Did you install the driver the hardway? If so reinstall it

No, I installed it using the easy way.

Should I try reinstalling it or trying to go back to Nouveau?

Well, I removed the Nvidia drivers, rebooted and it went into Opensuse without issues.
What struck me as rather odd is that the Nvidia drivers were functioning just fine for weeks until yesterday, when I just couldn’t go into Opensuse without the nomodeset option.

Thanks for your time gogalthorp.

Well, that’s your decision of course.

But if all that’s needed to get it to work is adding “nomodeset”, I would just do that…

OTOH, nomodeset should not be needed when installing the driver via the rpm packages (i.e. “the easy way”), as they blacklist nouveau anyway.
So I would suggest to just try to reinstall the packages.
