well I don’t use gnome but totem uses gstreamer, I think it use to use gstreamer_0.10 maybe an updede switched to gstreamer-1.x, do you have gstreamer 1.6 from packman installed, if not go to yast and install it from packman, if packman is setup properly with a higher priority you can install it with zypper
sudo zypper in gstreamer libgstreamer
if not use the --from flag, or you can post your repo list
Hi, I saw something similar in Tumbleweed with Totem 3.18.0-2.1 (see Bug 951150 ) but totem-3.16.4-2.3.x86_64 on Leap here plays OK.
Just check if gstreamer-plugins-libav-1.6.1-1.1.x86_64 from Packman repo is installed.

And make sure you also have gstreamer-plugins-bad-orig-addon and gstreamer-plugins-ugly-addon installed, although gstreamer-plugins-libav should be a fallback for practically all codecs.
Apparently it can also happen that gstreamer’s plugin cache is not being updated though, and so gstreamer might not be aware that the corresponding codec/plugin is actually installed.
So try to remove the folder ~/.cache/gstreamer-1.0/ too, to force a regeneration of the cache.

Do a full switch to Packman:
Code:
sudo zypper dup --from 9

Hi
gstreamer-plugins-ugly is broken… as in the 1.6.1 version has not
built. It’s all still at 1.4.5 whereas the rest of the stack is at
1.6.1.

I found PackMan’s version of gstreamer (1.6) not compatible with Totem (3.16.4) from Leap 42.1. The Totem won’t even start with gstreamer 1.6 telling that something is missing in my installation. The only way how to make it works on my machine is stay on gstreamer 1.4 (everything from openSUSE-Leap-42.1-Oss) with gstreamer-plugins-ugly-orig-addon (1.4.5) from PackMan and gstreamer-plugins-libav on 1.4.5 from PackMan archive (you have to download rpm as in the repository is only updated version which doesn’t work)
In the course of troubleshooting a VLC problem on a LEAP,
I haven’t seen any problems running Totem whether the gstreamer plugin is from OSS or from Packman…
As you say, Totem did work before but something happened.
Recommend you update your system with a “zypper up” although if you’ve already done what others have recommended before my post you probably would already have performed the equivalent of a “zypper dup” which also should have fixed your issue.

Oh, right. Haven’t noticed this… :\
But gstreamer-plugins-libav should still work, it does contain a codec
for MP4 too AFAIK.
So deleting the cache might help.
Or maybe try uninstalling gstreamer-plugins-ugly completely as a
temporary workaround, then libav should be used in any case I suppose.
Hi
Looks like the gstreamer-plugins-vaapi package needs uninstalling for
the mp4/totem issue. There is still work to be done on the package…

I don’t think that’s the problem here. It’s more likely the broken gstreamer-plugins-ugly package. Is there an eta for a fix? The problems this causes are worse than just totem not working. Anything relying on gstreamer, at all, for x264 decoding is completely broken. Thumbnailing, etc.
gstreamer-plugins-ugly 1.6.1 is available in Packman since a few days.

Everything works fine here. And even did with the outdated gstreamer-plugins-ugly.
I can only repeat:
do a full switch to Packman
remove the gstreamer cache
and everything should be fine.
Also, for x264 decoding gstreamer-plugins-ugly is not even used, it only contains a x264 encoder…
