Fresh Install - X server doesn't work

Hello

I’ve been using Linux for quite some time and thought I would give openSUSE a try after I built my new PC. I installed openSUSE and XP and can dual boot without an issues yet, but whenever I try to boot into openSUSE, the x server does not seem to want to start. I am using a Nvidia 9800GX2. I know it works with Linux as I have seen it done. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Hi
Have a read here;
Nvidia

I’ve tried that but it complains of dependencies. I cannot seem to add the needed dependencies. I cannot seem to get this to work…I tried manually installing the drivers but it says I do not have gcc installed. What is gcc?

Hi
gcc is the compiler to make/build the nvidia module. Are you following
the ‘1-click way’ or hard way?
Do you have a GUI running, just not the nvidia one?

Yes, I have a GUI running. I booted in safe mode, everything works there with the shotty drivers, at least it works though. When I would try the 1-click way it would complain of the dependencies, when I would try the hard way that is when I would hear about gcc, and thank you for the help.

I fiddled with it and updated while in safe mode and it now works. I generated a xorg.conf file while messing with it. I beileve that was the issue. However, now Firefox will not open.

I fixed it again. Thank you for all the help.

Hi
So nvidia-settings run, glxgears etc?

I would try firefox from a console and see if you get any errors.

Yep. I did glxgears. Gave me my frames per second, Firefox works and even have desktop effects working. Also did nvidia-settings and it detected my SLI which surprised me because XP didn’t even do that!

Thanks.

Hi

rotate the desktop
