Fresh Install: What to update?

Hello Forum,

I have successfully installed openSUSE 11.04_ x64_KDE. I want to update but I am overwhelmed by the number of updates in KPackageKit. There are 182 available updates (40 packages to install and 121 packages to update). Some packages carry a red shield, some yellow shield and some a light bulb. I am assuming that these packages are marked based on the priority and significance. Can somebody here help me decide which updates are absolutely necessary or otherwise? Or should I install everything that is offered to be updated or installed?

I had tried to install openSUSE before but did not succeed but today I just did it.:good: I was having problems with bootloader, which I finally sorted out. So this is my first openSUSE installation to HDD and I need the forum help in determining what to update.

Thanks

You should trust the updates, they were issued for a reason!

I wouldn’t use Package kit either

Open Yast > Software > Online Update

or use the terminal and do:

su -
zypper up

So I must update everything as it is? Okay.
However 182 updates are, don’t you think, way too many.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

182 is as many as is needed to update your system.
If you just want security patches do this

su -
zypper patch

I assume you only have active three repositories: oss, non-oss, and update.
Then, if you run YaST online update (aka YOU) you are safe.

I would first enable multiversion for the kernel.

Me neither.

Warning: what 'YOU does is equivalent to “zypper patch”. A “zypper up”
changes more things and is potentially more dangerous, specially for a
beginner. Those updates offered have less testing that the patches (those
in the update repo).

AH! so THAT is what is going on!

packagekit is offering, the same as the results of “up” while YaST
Online Update ‘only’ offers “patch”, yipee! i have been SO confused on
what was going on, but i knew to NOT let Kpackagekitchensinkandanchor
touch my stuff!!

we need to get this info shoved into a how-to (as in How to not let
package kit kill your system, also.) and i think oldcpu should put
something about this into the new-to-SUSE faqs

I’ve never used packagekit except as a reminder of pending updates, so I
don’t know what it does exactly. But it is not “zypper up”, because I never
do a zypper up, nor the yast equivalent. For example, most of the
multimedia packages I have are old, I don’t bother to update them once they
work.

I only run YOU and packagekit keeps silent. Unless you have to configure it
somehow and I didn’t. :-?

And now it keeps silent because I have removed it, till I can do the
upgrade to 11.4…

i’ve not used package kit either…i treat it like i treated the
updaterapplet, simply as a signal that i needed to open YOU and do some
deciding on what to let in, or not…

but it was confusing since packagekit and YOU never agreed…i wondered
why as i marked packagekit to NOT install anything, after i’d used YOU
to do what i wanted…

i saw in one of the forums (but have not read closely) what seems to be
a dev asking for testing help…seems he recognizes that pk is broke!

If I remember correctly packagekit removes locks. There is a bugzilla on that.
