Fresh install -- problems with Gmail "corruption error," font dpi, and FF crashing??

Folks:

Recently moved back? from TW to Leap 15.1 . . . there were some “issues” with the installer, pilot error combined with I think some installer problems . . . but, got past that and got a clean install running . . . . On reboot I launched FF and all of my previous user tabs were there, except for Gmail, which didn’t load due to “corruption error” problems?? All other sites loaded and logged in w/o issues. “nrickert” replied to my Installation thread suggesting that this was a “known issue” . . . and to post a new thread about it . . . so here it is. How to get Gmail to “uncorrupt” and log in?

Couple other issues with the new system . . . after the install the fonts were low res and hardly readable . . . I went into “fonts” and moved the “dpi” up from whatever it was, 8?? . . . and it’s now up to 360 dpi . . . fonts are still not crsipy, but I’m not sure where the dpi should be set to get good rendering of fonts?

And, lastly, booted Leap this am, launched FF and all of the tabs loaded the sites (except Gmail) . . . but the windows were “zoomed in” to a fraction of the page, pages were not by default “re-sized” or what have you to show the full window . . . I checked FF toolbar for “zoom” and it was set I think normally for 100%??? . . . right after I checked that FF crashed . . . . I ran a zypper ref && dup -l as from the TW days after that and rebooted out of Leap . . . so I could check Gmail . . . . Now in Lu 19.04 using FF w/o issues . . . . Any thoughts?

I’m not sure what you did there.

If you had a running Tumbleweed system, then installed Leap 15.1 with the same home directory, then some of the home directory configuration files are probably using a configuration that isn’t compatible with Leap 15.1. Generally, settings are forward compatible but not backward compatible.

You could try removing all user configuration (maybe “.config”, “.local” and “.mozilla”. Best to do that when not logged into your desktop. You could login to Icewm or at a command line for that. And then make a fresh start. Alternatively, just rename the old config files, and maybe you can later recover some of what was there.

To begin with, instead of removing configs, I’d remove

  • ~/.cache/mozilla/firefox
  • All gmail related cookies from FF
    Then restart FF and see if the problem persists.

FWIW I don’t see this issue, when using my TW’s homedir from my 15.1 test install.

@nrickert && knurpht:

Thanks for the replies . . . appreciate the specificity of the data on the “cache” . . . rather than removing everything . . . .

All of the rest of the FF tabs seemed to be functioning just fine . . . so I don’t know if “going nuclear” on everything is what I’d want to do . . . .

But, what about the “fonts” issue?? Is that a “config” issue? What about the “dpi”?? What would the general default dpi number be??

Is almost certainly a profile setting, and related to the Desktop you’re using (which you haven’t identified).

Recommend verifying it’s specific to your User profile by creating a new User, then connecting to your Gmail with FF with that User.

Assuming that solves your problem,
You can then consider the easiest way to either determine the exact settings that need to be fixed or simply migrating everything to your new, working profile (my recommendation all things equal)

@tsu2:

OK, right, good idea to create new user and see how that affects the situation . . . I’m away from that computer now for a few hours . . . I’ll post back with some updates on it, when I get there . . . .

@Knurpht:

I did try to run that command using zypper . . . and seemingly it said “nothing found” . . . and this time the terminal and all apps seemed to be zoomed in, hard to read . . . so I gave up on the old user profile . . . .

@tsu2:

And, I followed this advice . . . was able to get to “users and groups” and add a new profile . . . think I had to reboot to get it to show up in the log in window . . . and that did seem to return things to normalcy . . . looks like I can access the photos and stuff from the old user, in Dolphin . . . might be the extent of it . . . .

Where did I mention zypper? Zypper is a package manager, not a file manager. So the entire command would be

rm ~/.cache/mozilla/firefox

@Knurpht:

OK, indeed, you didn’t mention zypper . . . that was my assumption . . . still relatively new to OpenSUSE, I thought “zypper” is somewhat like “apt” in ubuntu, where “apt” gets put in front of everything that needs to be done in the Terminal . . . . I could get around to trying out that command . . . it does however seem like there are other issues that went along with trying to re-use the previous TW user account, back in time to Leap 15.1 . . . .

When I get back to the old user I’ll try your suggestion again . . . .

@Knurpht:

Logged back into the old user . . . back to everything being “magnified” or “zoomed” in . . . ran your suggested command, both using “sudo” and without, as you posted–both ways “failed” . . . with the error, “could not remove xxx/mozilla/firefox . . . is a directory.”

I previously tried to find the “configuration” directory in the “computer” . . . but seemingly nothing showed up that could be understood as relating to the various “configurations” as suggested by nrickert . . . to try to manually trash them . . . did that in icewm . . . before I made the new user account . . . .

I’m back in the new user account now, things are readable . . . maybe later I’ll see if I can find what might be “config” directories . . . files . . . .
