I just bought a Thinkpad X300. There’s nothing special about the LAN card, it’s the standard Intel gigabit ethernet. From what I’ve been reading, it seems like everyone BUT me has had their ethernet work “out of the box” on many distros.
I plug in the cable, I get lights on the ethernet port, but no matter what settings I put into the manual config, ethernet doesn’t work. I’m using Shaw cable, and every one of my other linux installs have had no problem working right away via DHCP. Even so, I copied settings from this working Ubuntu box, and still no go.
I’ve tried both Ubuntu 8.04 and openSUSE 11. Same problem. I didn’t notice if ethernet worked in XP, as the first thing I did was pop in a LiveCD to install a REAL OS.
Any ideas??? I’ve been using linux for a couple of years, and have been able to solve 100% of my problems with a simple google search… until now.

PS: Wifi worked out of the box, just having problems with ethernet.
