Fresh 13.1 KDE install boots to blank screen unless nomodeset on intel HD 4600

Hi,

I finally got a fresh 13.1 install to boot on my latest-gen i7 laptop with HD 4600 graphics, but it only boots successfully with the nomodeset option in Grub. If I boot in failsafe mode, it will hang at “Reached target graphical interface.”** A fresh install boots to a blank screen, and failsafe mode also fails.** Seems odd for such a mainstream graphics chip, though it is still fairly new.

Any idea as to how I can go about diagnosing this, so that I don’t have to boot with the nomodeset option? Is this a known bug?

First of all, please check that you have the latest xf86-video-intel from the Update repo installed. The version included in 13.1 could crash on some systems but this should be fixed already.

Please do a normal boot (without nomodeset), then reboot with nomodeset and post /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old (via http://susepaste.org f.e.).

Since this is an intel chip, you might have a problem with the new SNA acceleration.
Try to switch to the older but stable UXA:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Switch_xf86-video-intel_to_UXA

As to why Failsafe mode is not working:
Please check, that you have a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install, that’s needed for Failsafe/Recovery Mode.

Thanks for the suggestions; unfortunately it’s still not working. My openSUSE install is fully updated, including the latest xf86-video-intel (2.99.906-12.1 64-bit). Disabling SNA did not solve the problem. Here is /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old:

Have any other ideas?

Not really at the moment.
I don’t find any error in there.

Maybe try to boot with “plymouth.enable=0” added to the boot options?

This bug report may be of interest

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=989084

It might be worth reviewing kernel bugs too.

That solved my problem, thank you! The issue, as described in the (unresolved/closed) bug, is that the backlight on my laptop screen is getting set to 0 early in the boot process. The problem is solved by using the “acpi_backlight=vendor” kernel setting in Grub.

That’s good to know. It may be of help to others with this hardware.

WOW!!! I’m glad I found this thread!!!

Patricia

Edit: is the “acpi_backlight=vendor” addition into the boot options line in GRUB2?

Easiest made persistent in Yast -boot loader section

Turned out that the acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" entry in the kernel optional command line parameters did everything for me. Nomodeset worked to get installed, but then I couldn’t adjust the screen brightness and my laptop’s extra HDMI port didn’t work. After this acpi_osi entry was added, all is wonderful!!! lol!

Hi
I would look at raising a bug so it gets fixed in later kernels (don’t think current kernel will be present if it goes evergreen).

Does the system have the latest BIOS? Here is my bug for reference https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=869573 all they needed was the output from dmidecode (you need to install via zypper and run as root user).

Maybe I should do that… I tried that link on bugzilla and it said I wasn’t authorized to view it, although I seem to be logged into bugzilla correctly (it’s showing my email address). It seems like a simple fix. Maybe a sticky on the hardware forum about Intel graphics?

Hi
Ahh ok, maybe because it was during the SLED 12 beta testing. It needs
to be a raised as a bug because it’s device specific with blacklists
and the like.
