I am running openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.2.1 on a MacBook Pro.
The whole screen freezes sometimes. I noticed that this happens only after viewing embedded PDF content in Firefox. (It is not happening always).
My firefox version is 3.0.7 and my acroread version is 8.1.3.
The machine goes very slow and does not respond to anything so that I was not even able to run “top” to see what is happening. I tried to ssh from another machine but it gets timed out.
Acrobat Reader has always been a bit of a piece of crap in its integration
with browsers. I typically install ‘PDF Download’ (2.1.0.2 currently) as
soon as I can so that my PDF loading is no longer stupid. It hooks in
between the browser’s desire to let the plugin do everything and the
plugins’ own incompetence and lets you choose what to do whenever you
select a PDF (open, just download, send it to the plugin, etc.). Without
this the Acrobat plugin is obnoxiously slow when downloading a PDF
(significantly slower than Firefox on its own obviously) and causes the
symptoms you have reported.
Good luck.
