Freezing Issue 11.2 KDE

I burned a live cd for openSuse 11.2 KDE. I tried it live, thought it was amazing so i installed. Everything seems installed correctly so far (i did automatic partitioning), but my computer keeps freezing and wont unfreeze. I am thinking it is because of a lack of ram, but maybe it’s something else. I am waiting for 2GB’s of ram to show up in the mail any day to add to my 512Mb. I was running Mint xfce before and it was fine. but since i am getting more memory i thought i would try 11.2 kde.

PC Specs:
Dell Dimension 9150
Pentium 4 processor.
512mb ram
160 gb hard drive

I turned the computer off and i am thinking of leaving it off until i get the new ram installed.

Any thoughts? I am really anxious to get started of learning openSuse; I was hoping I didn’t have to wait for the mail man.

Any ideas are apprciated.

well! you said “i am thinking of leaving it off until i
get the new ram installed.” so i didn’t figure you would be back here
until you could say:

  1. i installed the new RAM and everything is wonderful!
    or
  2. i installed the RAM and it still freezes…

when you say it freezes, what (exactly) do you mean?
does it, for example stop working and nothing moves, the cap and num
lock lights on the keyboard flash but nothing else works and nothing
happens when i push Ctrl+Alt+F1, or what?

what about if you turn off desktop effects…does it still freeze?

what graphics do you have? have you installed the open source driver,
or what?

by the way, it was less than an hour between your posts…do you think
there are paid service technicians waiting for your help plea?

palladium

@Palladium, i know my posts weren’t very far apart, and the reason for the second one was because after reading my first post I felt that I didn’t really ask a question or invite ideas. I don’t think anyone is waiting on my becon call.

I am glad for having the opportunity to use openSuse.

As far as the freezing, i didn’t see the caplock blinking. It would browse the internet for a while, but when i tried messing with compiz and/or Yast it would freeze and i would give it time but it wouldn’t unfreeze; I had to push the power button on the tower to shutoff. I felt maybe to much was going on for the ram to handle. I tried ctl-alt-delete, but maybe that doesn’t work for linux; only windows. I see that you wrote ctrl-alt-f1. I am assuming that works similarly. Hopefully my ram will get here soon. I probably could find a way to use openSuse as xfce until i get the ram installed, but i think i will just wait. Hopefully that solves that part of it. I will keep you posted. Thanks for your help.

Wait, have i downloaded what opensource driver? Graphics Card driver? I tried to do the standard update after install but i got an error message.

Open a terminal and do this and post result

/sbin/lspci -nnk

then we can see your hardware.

You said there was an error when you tried to update. Post the error…

AFAICS the instability started when you started experimenting with compiz (why on KDE4?). So I guess your videocard cannot do compositing (without driver install or just because of hardware incapability).

Since you just started, reinstall, create a new clean /home and start using openSUSE with the defaults first. That way you will learn how things work first. If you create trouble by then you will at least know what’s happening or where to look.

appreciate the responses. I am still waiting for the ram. I am almost done with the fresh install. Maybe it wasn’t compiz, but i was trying out the cube and some other featuress like that.

Is there anything i should install as far as drivers or aps after install of opensuse; for basic funcionality?

@caf4926 Here is /sbin/1spci -nnk…

DBus error : Unable to get transaction id from packagekit.

I recieved this error while browsing with Firefox. Firefox seems to be loading a little slow during browsing.

I did the update after install when i was prompt, 18 items. and the app install seemed to go well.

I am keeping it basic at this time and things are working nicely, but i am guessing i will need some drivers before i try to do things like wobbly windows, cube rotation, etc.

update

After I recieved that error message I was promted to go to the ap installer and install a bunch of batch files, I restarted and things are working pretty well right now.

Hopefully if you are reading this you have read prior posts to this thread to understand what is going on.
Now from some reading I have been doing, I think the problem I was having with compiz fusion (cube rotation, wobbly windows, and other effects) had to do with me needing the proprietary driver for my graphics card.

I found this link for help with this. What do you think about this idea, these instuctions, and what do you think the best way to do this is. Thanks in advance!

ATI - openSUSE

Hi Im having a very simular problem,

I was using 11.0 with gnome with no problems, Since Ive upgraded to 11.2 on my Acer Aspire Laptop. Dual Core, For no reason I can make sense of. It Just freezes, The mouse stops dead on the screen, the caps light wont go on or off, You can still eject or load a cd but cant change to another command line to kill the desktop and reload it. it does not seem to follow a patten, one time I can be using it for hours with no problem, another time it will lock up three or four times before I can get any work done. I can go away from it, come back and its frozen.

Ive tried to find other people with simular problems but thought it must be just me, Im obviously not alone then.

When it is working, Its great, nice and fast, graphics are very smooth. So far Ive have been very lucky and every time it freezes, when I hold the power button down and restart, It recovers all my work 100%.

I am suprised thow that I dont have to log back in on restart, it seems to go straight in to my desktop as thow Id logged in.

If anyone knows what is happening could it perhaps be screen saver or power related, could they please help

regards

Mark.

sounds like it is going into hibernation, standby or suspend!

check your settings in powerdevil, kpowersave (or whatever you are
using for power control—like maybe in the bios also) because maybe
it is set to automatically suspend after xx minutes of inactivity…

of course, i could be wrong…i was once.

palladium

Hi palladium, I know what you mean, but I have to hold the power button for 5 seconds until the laptop turns off, then when it comes on with the second press and goes through the normal post boot with splash screens, it then goes straight into desktop, if it has not shut down properly as thow the logon screen was not required.

I have my power management set at performance as I leave my mains lead in. and as I said earlier, It can just decide to freeze whilst im in the midst of using it, as well as when left idle. Since I lasted posted, It was left over 1 hour, and had gone into the screen saver, and locked the screen. I simply logged back in and it has not frozen at all, on another day, It can freeze and force you to re-boot several times before it settles down, its most strange.

once it freezes, you have lost the use of the keyboard and mouse, so cant do anything accept hold down the power button until it turns off.

I tried to disable the screen saver and any fancy graphics, but it still froze so it obiously was not to do with that.

My experience is with windows, but I have given this laptop 100% over to linux, and enjoy using it.

I get the feeling that some part of the op system gets itself stuck in a loop that ties up the processor preventing it from poleing the keyboard so you cant break out of it. but what part has the bug???

zypper lr -d

exactly how did you get from openSUSE 11.0 to 11.2?

are you running 64 or 32?

did you have this problem from the very first time you booted 11.2?

are you running compiz?

how often and for how long do you log into gnome as root?

did you ever have to use one of the boot parameters like acpi=off with
11.0?

did you change any BIOS settings when moving from 11.0 to 11.2?

is your specific model Acer listed here:
http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Laptops/Acer

try this:

  1. select a blank screen for screen saver, do not select random (some
of those are crazy with some hardware)…do the freezes end?

if not, try

  1. in YaST add a new user, then log out from your current session and
into the new user…do not do ANY customization at all…instead,
crank up firefox or whatever and go do some browsing…play some
    games…write a letter in OpenOffice…whatever you normally do…how
    long before the first freeze?

check back…

@markcogley: I re installed opensuse 11.2 from a live disk and i have not done anything with widgets or compiz (which i would love to use), and so far everything seems to be working well; no freezing. I can log in and log out without freezing.

When i was using widgets and compiz (wobblywindows, cube rotation, etc) my computer would freeze exactly like you are saying. I would have to hold the power button down until shut off. I didn’t have a problem turning it back on; it would boot up like normal, until freeze again.

So, for me to keep openSuse as my operating system on this PC i will need to be able to use compiz and widgets. So i am going to spend some time to try to make this work because this OS looks and feels awesome.

I have tried to play a movie but it didn’t work, i have tried to play a song using amorak but didn’t work (no sound). I do get sound on videos from browsing firefox (youtube, etc)

I am thinking I need proper driver for my graphics card and possibly some additional codecs to make the video and music play correctly. Below is a link i am looking into…

Hi Palladium

Many thanks for your suggestions.

I upgraded from 11 to 11.2 by downloading the disk image from on line and creating a iso disk. I have to admit

I did download the image about 6 days before the official release countdown expired it is just possible that there is a bug in this version.

I Let the disk set itself up and created a new user account with a different name, my old account is still there until I gradually move files across from it.

This time around I chose KDE over Gnome, fancied a change. so different user interface then before.

Just the one screen saver selected, I have tried without this enabled but still freezes

This version is a 32 bit version, 64 bit informed me it could not install on this hardware.

I only log into root as su occationaly when I need that level of privelidge, I Prefer to use my own account as If im not mistaken, this protects the system and makes it much more dificult for someone to do to much damage.

The model is not on the list Aspire 5612ZWLMi

I have recently added Libdvdcss, and Videolan, but the freezing was taking place from day one of the new install.

I will try a new account again just to see if anything was amiss when it setup my account, but being as this was a brand new setup,
Im not sure what if any improvement will make, but I will give it a go and post results.

Im thinking, If this cant be resolved, is there a way to default back to Gnome without re-installing all over again.

Id really like to resolve this issue with KDE if not just for me but to help others with the same problem, but as a last resort, Ill have to go back to Gnome.

Thanks for taking the time to help me with this I appreciate it very much.

Mark.

ok, you have FAR too many repos enabled…they can and do get into
each others way…

disable 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 10…

leaving enabled only:
2 Packman
5 Updates
8 Non-OSS
9 OSS

and, anytime you use a “1-Click Install” then check afterwards and
make SURE only those four are enabled…

read more on that here:
http://forums.opensuse.org/new-user-how-faq-read-only/424611-new-users-opensuse-pre-install-general-please-read.html#post2058902

and then you need a REAL guru to help you (i don’t use zipper much,
but you need to follow caf4926’s advice…i’ll see if he is around and
will stop in…

if his magic won’t fix your machine, good luck!

Thanks, It was getting a bit junked up, as you can see I have taken your advice and now these are my repos.

I have also disabled the fancy effects on the desktop, there nice but if that could be causing problems, not missed to much

So far I cant get it to freeze up, but will keep you posted early days yet, but one bonus, things seem a bit faster without the affects.

If I add a new application that has added a reference to a new repo down the line, should I remove it once the apps installed and working ok. I take it that once its accessed the repo initially, it will have downloaded any files needed, but may possibly need access again at some point for updates, so do you remove, or just disable it, and occationally enable it to check for updates, how does this work???

Thanks, Things are slowly but surely starting to make sense now.

regards

Mark
