Freeze in initial configuration 11.1

Hi,

I’ve been having trouble with this install all day…

It all seemed smooth at first trying to dual boot with Vista then things went haywire, it keeps freezing after install while it’s performing the initial configuration. i’ve tired numerous times to make it work by using fail-safe and trying to repair the installation with the DVD but to no avail… finally i clicked no to the window asking me if i want to continue with the install and it takes me to a login screen but not user name or password i use will work…

hardware : socket 478 Intel Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro AGP
4GB PC3200
2x 250GB IDE HDD, 80GB sata HDD
Airlink 802.11G pci card
Asus P4P800D-x Mobo

any help would be awesome.

thanks in advance, James.

So it sounds like you have completed the installation. But is it the initial config after the system is installed and you reboot to the part where your system is configuring devices etc…?
Possibly it’s the graphics (X) that is the problem.

Login should be
the username you used and password

Note. The password does not display as you type and when done it will still be a CLI prompt.

I tried the same user name and password i told it to use during install but it still wont let me in. this is really starting to get frustrating…

is ther a way i can sneak some drivers for my video card in before i install so that X is configured for it already?

No. At least I don’t think so.
During install, if I had this problem I would un-check the box Automatic Config here:
Installation/11.1 DVD Install - openSUSE

Then I would configure X to use vesa. But you have to try and config everything and you might not know what to do.

I’m not sure I’m best qualified to advise any further, I wouldn’t like to make your experience any more distressing.

But have you rebooted and you get the grub menu? If yes, try Failsafe boot!

or at the cli

I guess it’s worth trying to login as root. If you can, use this to load vesa:

sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
