Freeze at boot

I downloaded the KDE openSUSE live-cd image and I burnt it on a CD and two different flash drives (using the dd command, as intended) and my computer freezes even before it boots the live cd/usb, at the bios laptop welcome screen (where you access the boot menu etc.)

I have an HP 6735b: ATI Radeon HD 3200, Broadcom wireless card. How could I fix this?

In other words you can’t boot a cd or USB?
But you can boot the computer without those devices in place for booting?
It’s only when you have the cd or usb in place that your machine will freeze?
Is that true with all distros or is openSUSE the only one you tried so far?

It completely freezes and i have to hold the power button to shut it down and then turn it on again so i can boot to hard disk. I’ve booted ubuntu, mint, kubuntu etc. from live usb/cd without any problemss

That you are not even getting to the boot menu is going to make it difficult to move forward. Are you able to try the burned CD or the USB in a different computer to see it’s actually functional.?

We talked on IRC (but the connection was lost).
It seems he could install other distros.
Have you tried any of those: Index of /repositories/KDE:/Medias/images/iso

Yes, I understand that
But it’s extremely odd to not even make the boot menu. Look at this way, I work with Linux and install it almost daily, and this has never happened to me…yet.

-=welcome=-

you say it “freezes before it boots the live cd” what does that mean?
that is, do you see the machines BIOS message come up and hear the
self-test beep?

and then what? do you see something like:

Loading…

and what happens, does the string of dots stop getting longer…or do
they continue and eventually a green screen comes up, and you select
boot the CD and THEN nothing else happens?

or, does the green screen change to a different green screen but then
it stays that way forever…

or, just what ARE you seeing…we need to know WHEN in the process it
stops moving, and exactly what you see when it stops, and what was the
last thing you saw just before that…

then, maybe we can figure out what your problem is…

but, tell me this also:

did you:

  1. get your install image from http://software.opensuse.org/113/en ?
    (if not, then where?)
  2. check the md5sum of the downloaded iso?
  3. do this http://tinyurl.com/25ydj4a before install attempt?

if you answered “no” (or “don’t know”) to any of those then do step 3
now, and if the disk has errors see the following cites before you
start over (you must attempt install from a perfect disk ONLY!):

I feel annoyed that I can’t put my wide range of languages on stupid

It’s before the green screen with the Boot from hard disk/installation/check installation media menu. The first screen which appears when you turn on your computer, the hardware/bios generated one. Mine says HP because I have an HP laptop. I was advised that Index of /repositories/KDE:/Medias/images/iso wouldn’t help much because the problem might be with the bootloader on opensuse but I’m going to try them now.

how about answering these questions which you missed the first time
through:
