I just discovered this recently. What is it?
Is it interesting??

This links should get you started
openSUSE:IRC for newbies - openSUSE

I logged into it a few times - no one says anything - what is the point of the system?

To get quick awnsers to problems, ask developers, participate to project meetings, even chatting (#opensuse-chat)… IRC is useful for a lot of things and doesn’t require to register.

IRC works that way. People just hangout . But something suddenly people
start having a conversation.

I think openSUSE project members use IRC to meet and discuss stuff
about openSUSE project. IRC is probably being used as a meeting room
like the ones we use at work.

For Example :- you can find logs like this which you can browse through

http://community.opensuse.org/meetings/opensuse-project/2013/

Other IRC channels hosted by some servers offers downloads(mp3s and
stuff) etc…

IRC also has bots/robots which will help you to learn about topics.

Example :-

You can also type ‘/msg SUSEhelp !help’. This will
move you to a second window where you are having a private chat with the
server software help bot. In this window you can just type !wireless to
get the distilled knowledge of the help chat folks on wireless.

Some IRC channels are pretty active . Also note that people are not
generally polite on IRC channels.

you can ping an individual by typing their name in the chat window.

IRC is a different world altogether and it does take one sometime to get
to know how things work there.
