Free telephony

Hello I’m wondering is there any (free) software available to make a call from a computer to a landline/cell phone? as at the moment we (me and my girlfriend) only have one cell phone between us and it’s inconvenient to send sms messages to one another…so anything free that could help us out on this one? Thanks

I can point you to this site:

Linux - voip-info.org

Go to Skype.com and install their software. They have a version for Suse that installs just fine. It’s not free to call a cell phone or landline, but it’s not expensive, either. I don’t know where you live, but you can call most countries for 2.1 cents per minute. That’s 476 minutes for 10 us dollars. It’s a good deal. It’s not a monthly charge, either, so you don’t have to start all over in 30 days, and you can pay as you go.

While I have a cell phone, I make calls from Skype when I don’t have my phone near me. I started out with $10, and even after a few 45 minute phone calls, I still have just over $9 left.

Of course, if you both have a computer, Skype to Skype calls are free. That’s how we talk my sister-in-law, who lives in New Zealand, and video is free, too. Great software.

Skype is 100% free and works great to call any land line or cell phone
on earth (i use it regularly)…you DO have to pay for the call (of
course) but even that is often less than it would cost to pick up the
phone and call (say) China…

and, you can call any Skype users anywhere, free…with video!
