Forum tags in subject line should be capitalized, bold and enclosed with square brackets

Should be in the same style of the now RIP Tumbleweed forum.

IMO it should likely be a very simple alternation to the existing code and shouldn’t likely affect how the tags work.
Applying what I suggest should immediately allow the eye to separate the tag from the subject line content and enable quick visual skimming the topics for versions of openSUSE.

eg
instead of

TUMBLEWEED
**[TUMBLEWEED]

**openSUSE 13.2
[openSUSE 13.2]

TSU

I disagree.

The tag already stands out nicely, because it is plain text rather than part of an active web link. ALL CAPS is harder to read.

I see no tags, neither on web nor on nntp. Where are they?

Look at the titles with new threads. They are now pre-fixed.

I did, but I do not see them.

For example, I look at this one

https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/509038-change-a-file-type-association-between-apps

started yesterday.

The title I see is:

Thread: change a file type association between apps

…]

Ah, I see it. It is on the small, greyed tittle at the top. Not the big one:

Home Forum English Get Technical Help Here Applications
openSUSE 13.2 change a file type association between apps

And that tittle is not transmitted to the nntp side.

Same here, but when you reply (web-side) you see it. Also appears via ‘New Posts’ and ‘Today’s Posts’ in list of threads. I would like to see it displayed within the thread page too.

And that tittle is not transmitted to the nntp side.

Yes, I think that is still being worked on.

You might recall that I said that I don’t have time to tweak the gateway
right now. That still is true.

Yes, I remember.

It’s also on the title line in the forum index page, and much more obvious there.

Well… if the, don’t know how to call it, main tittle is altered, it
would be sent as is through any gateway. Same as when we change the
subject line in email.

But the title or subject is not changed, the tag goes to a different
place, so I assume it is more difficult to send to the nntp side.

And I wouldn’t know where to start if I tried to help there.

Not to me…

I read on the nntp side, using Thunderbird. When in doubt, I click on
the link at the bottom, which, if the cookies permit (which they don’t
always), I get the web page at the appropriate thread open. This I do
when I have doubts that I got all the information. Now I will have to do
this more often, just to find out what the poster is using (if I have
Internet that moment).

Well, Jim said he can’t do it now…

Of course, I’ll wait. I’m not complaining, just commenting

Would there be a way to concoct a script, using curl, lynx or whatever,
to extract and display the tags? Do you think that would be easy?

Nor to me. Even when I’m using the web interface, it takes a conscious
effort to visually parse the difference between the tag and the subject on
the forum index page. Except for the threads I’ve already visited. Then the
fact that the tag’s color doesn’t change with the subject when it becomes a
visited link, finally makes it stand out. But I rarely use the web side, and
it’s ‘really’ not obvious to me on the nntp side. ;-7

Not a bad kludge Carlos, But of course it only works when there ‘IS’ a link.
For example, in this thread posts by tsu2, deano ferrari, & nrickert have
such links. Whereas neither Jim Henderson’s nor any of yours do. I’m
thinking that means that both you, and Jim actually post on the nntp side,
And at the time of posting, the eventual link to the web side post ID isn’t
known to the nntp server, and can’t be included. Bet this post won’t have a
link either…

So until somebody from the webside replies to an nntp side thread, I guess
we’d have to open the relevant forum in the browser. and paste the subject
into the search forum web tool.

And that’s more pointy clicky bull dodo, than my keyboard oriented fingers
want to do, just to rule out the relevance of those threads that used to
belong in the separate tumbleweeds forum… <sigh>

By the way, I’m curious what an nttp side ‘Tumbleweeds’ user is supposed to
due, to include the ‘mandatory’ tags when starting a new thread?

Not that that will matter much to me personally. My primary PC needs an
Nvidia (non free) driver, which would make the bleeding edge nature of an
Opensuse rolling release, a little unstable on my machine…

Correct.

Correct

Yes. But a thread started on the nntp side will not have tags anyway, so
it doesn’t make sense to try find them on the web side. On the other
hand, any thread started on the web side will have them, and will have a
link at least on the initial post of the thread.

I wonder if we could concoct a script to use lynx or curl or whatever
and parse the result to just print the tags in the CLI for us. :-?

We can’t.

We’ll just have to include the information in the text. Not just for
tumbleweed, but for anything.

The information is all stored in a database, Carlos. We don’t scrape
stuff from the web side (that would be a ridiculous way to handle it).
The database schema itself is quite complex, and will take some time to
sort out.

As I have said a few times now, spare time is not something I have a lot
of, but it’s on my radar to do.

Your comments come across as complaints. We know you’re waiting for it.
Your patience is appreciated. Your constant “comments” about it not
being done (which actually are complaints) are not.
