Are we going to get an option to enter a signature for the forums, back?
It’s a definite PITA to have to re-enter information every post that is made…
Thanks
Signatures are not available in Discourse by default, but there is a plugin:
However… signatures add a lot of unnecessary clutter to a conversation.
And to what end?
- If a user wants to share information about themselves/their computer/their pet skunk named Chris… they can add that to their profile which can be easily seen with a click.
- If a user wants to sign off their post with their name… that’s already been done for them at the top of their post, there’s no need for making a sandwich.
- If a user wants to add a “Yours truly” or “Thanks in advance” or “Love you XOXO” to their posts… how sincere is the sentiment if it’s been automatically tacked to the end by a Discourse Plugin?
- And finally, if a user wants to add an image of their sweet car/edgy flame design/anime waifu/pet badger named Janet to the end of every post… Stop. Stop that.
(Of course, they are more than welcome to add a sick header to their profile page)
Maybe if the signatures could be set to only display for the first time a user has posted in a topic it wouldn’t be as distracting, but I personally wouldn’t support such a change.
(Not that my opinion particularly counts for much, mind)
As noted, it’s not a standard feature - but I’ll add this to our list of plugins to take a look at in the future.
And if that plugin is considered to be enabled … let’s hope there is a setting (check-box) on my profile that I can click ON:
Do not show signatures in the Forum.
What would yours look like? (To get an idea.) — So far, I agree with @ikanotheokara .
Good thoughts for consideration as well. I would tend to agree that the user profile is a good place to put information, and then just include a note in your topics where it’s relevant saying “config info in my profile”. This would be a good benefit for established forum members (profiles aren’t visible until you’ve hit TL1 as I recall).
As with everything it has pros and cons.
As one of the cons in our earlier incarnation, I remember that people put in there details of their hard and software used. Just as backgrund information. The cons here were:
- they often forgot to update the signature when is was needed to bring it up-to-date;
- there is only one signature and it is shown also when older posts are visited, thus when updated it did not fit anymore with that post and it’s thread.
And when you mean that having things that are crucial to understanding your problem/question dismisses you from starting your post with telling which hard/software you have, you are wrong.
In those times it was a PITA to read through a whole post without understanding much to find out that at the very end you had to go through the signature first and then re-read the post.
If the issue is the hassle of having to type out your system specifics every time, why not use Espanso?
It’s a bit of a kerfuffle to get setup in Wayland under openSUSE (I would love to see the Wayland version and kdotool make their way into the official Tumbleweed repo), but I guarantee it’s worth it.
A few example signatures I just threw together:
The Eastern
A few keys are pressed
Ah-- how the text now expands
Fish mint in summer
– Typed via Espanso (:mysig)
The Western
And now some parting words from me
I wanted you to know
How easy signing posts can be
When using Espanso
– Typed via Espanso (:mysig)
Note that these two signatures share the same trigger. Espanso will let you choose from a list if a trigger is used multiple times.
The Nerd
AMD Ryzen 9700X | 32 GGB DDR5 | AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT
openSUSE Tumbleweed (20260924) | KDE Plasma 6.7.5 | Wayland
– Typed via Espanso (:myrig)
And because Espanso can use shell commands (and more!) as variables, the version numbers for Tumbleweed and Plasma will dynamically change as they update.
I’d like to see some old Discourse Plug-in do that ![]()
And that, as I already mentioned above, will falsify all postings done before that change, because the new signature will show below all your posts, even if 10 years old.
How? Espanso can’t edit an already posted post, it’s just a fancy text expander. That’s why it is a much better solution.
Old posts keep the old information, new posts always have the newest information at time of post.
Users which come here and seek for help, won’t have a signature with any usefull system informations which would support the helpers. There won’t be repo infos, there won’t be full inxi output or any other usefull stuff. So what is the benefit of some random informations which do not help by finding a problem solution except distracting from the real issue?
So maybe only the permanent helpers will have a signature. But why should the helpers post anything about their system?
In most forums, signatures are useless sentences and manga c**p which turns the forum into a kindergarten where you have to seek the content between all the useless stuff. Come on, this is a technical help forum…
@hui ACK!
In the FAQ it is said what likely is of interest or asked often. Maybe there could be some more explicit and clear pointer to that.
But I really don’t want to see signatures of zypper lr -d or inxi <somewhat>! And even less of Linux user since 1840!

OK, thus it isn’t a signature as understood on forums.
It is some text generator that puts it’s text somewhere in your post.
Exactly. I was offering Espanso as an alternative to signatures specifically in response to OP’s comment about it being a “PITA” to re-enter information in every post.
Espanso really is great. I mostly use it for shortcuts in commonly used CSS and the like. It had never occurred to me to use it as a forum signature/system info generator (because I don’t care for forum signatures and I’m not sharing system info enough to need to automate it), but it’s been fun playing around ![]()

It’s a shame I’ll probably never use them again, but fun nonetheless.
When you are proposing to have all this in every post a member adds, see please @hui 's comment.
What? When did I propose that? I offered a way to share system information without having to type it all out or copy from a terminal.
Please show me where I proposed including this in every post a member adds. In the very first reply to OP I explained exactly why I do NOT want this.
Well, yes. Maybe, it was not quite obvious.
