I installed Google Earth 5.2 and every time I launched it it would crash. I have the latest nVidia drivers properly installed and 5.1 worked flawlessly. I searched the web and came up with the solution…and would like to share it with you…
Hello etech97. I had not even installed GoogleEarth Since my last openSUSE 11.3 install, so I decided why not give it a try. I just installed version 5.2 something and indeed on the first start, it went away just about the time it would have displayed the Tips window. I located the GoogleEarthPlus.conf in ~/.config/Google jsut as you suggested. The setting for enableTips, was not present at all and had to be added. But once I added it, GoogleEarth would then run. Thanks for the tip there tech97.
Thanks for posting this workaround :). It was necessary on my main 11.3 system and KDE 4.4.4 (default install with all updates applied, except graphics driver “intellegacy”)
I first installed google earth 5.2 on my test 11.3 system, kernel-desktop 2.6.36-90.1, and KDE 4.5.2 (graphic driver “intel”). Without the workaround applied, 5.2 did NOT crash once, and google earth’s tips were available on startup. This suggests to me that the problem maybe fixed in KDE >= 4.5.x
