for teh fail

did my annual desktop linux install of 12.3 just now.

isn’t happening.

other distros detect the wifi fine and just prompt me for the pw.

not suse.
it didn’t even detect the builtin wifi card (toshiba satellite A665).

after listing the modules, it listed “rtlwifi” which, i think, is the right one.
but if it was loaded, why no detection.

whatever.
i’m out.

Soapbox is over that way ---->>>>>>

Closing thread and moving, nntp users please wait until it’s moved before replying.

This no request for advice, but another rant. Can it be moved to

A system will never use rtlwifi by itself, and I have no idea what Toshiba
installs in the A665.

Have you installed the kernel-firmware package? None of the rtlwifi family of
drivers will work without it. Without firmware, the driver cannot finish
initialization and will not create a wlan device, thus no wireless.

Thread moved and reopened for consumption…

Didnt even bother to ask for a possible solution, like fixing the ifup bug as its a known issue with openSUSE

I doubt he even installed the OS, he just posted it to provoke a response.

These kinds of posts are very common on Linux and OS X forums - people post something inflammatory and then go and wait for the obvious responses. ie. Trolling, they usually are 1-post-wonders or very new with only a few posts. I don’t know why they do it and what satisfaction they get out of it, it’s very weird.

Don’t laptop installs of openSUSE default to KDE’s Network Manager for network connections rather than ifup? I know the
OP didn’t specify whether using KDE/GNOME but I don’t care since there’s no need to feed the trolls.

I have heard the issue happens either way.
A bug in openSUSE 12.3 it seems
