What gets me is that when Windows’ desktop shows up it is still not available for a few moments for me. When Linux is booted up, except for making a wireless network connection, it is good to go once it shows up.
It will depend on which system you use most. That will be the slower one - starting servers, added services and such, that the less-used OS doesn’t have.
Here at home I have a small Compaq HT running oS 11.3 32 bits that came with xp preinstalled. oS starts slower - and goes right into xbmc. XP boots perceptibly faster, but then there’s only a couple games installed there, no internet connection (and therefore no anti-virus or updates).
My mom uses XP and also have oS 11.1 installed there. She only use XP, with a ton of anti-virus, skype and other services I don’t even want to hear about (my sister deals with windows). oS11.1, that I installed so I could work when I’m there, boots to a usable desktop much, MUCH faster.
Noting the reply concerning a nerdy question well going completely nerd the 10.x boot up time is amazing really considering all of things that go on. All those checks that aren’t even present in windows.
rotfl! However. I’ve lost count of the number of times I have seen that dreaded message during boot on the earlier stuff - discs not checked for nnnn days. Often well over 100 in my case. Much much longer than that for some time after the 1st install and early updates. Why have I rebooted - often because I want to clean the dust out of my PC. More recently because my set up using opensuse 10.3 was beginning to go flakey due to the installation of none repo browsers to keep up with changes on the web.
A few weeks ago the controller on my raid set up started to make that horrid high pitched wine as one of the discs was a falling over. No panic, I can still use the machine while the disc was reformatted and rebuilt into the array but time to replace the discs and upgrade otherwise I would probably still be running 10.3 maybe rebooting every 50 days or so due to browser problems- who cares about boot up times. In any case 11.4 boots up far more quickly than both xp and vista. My son runs 7 but haven’t looked at that yet, he spends most of his time away at uni. He tells me that 7 has some of the features now in kde - I wonder where they got the ideas from.
For me XP was a pain in my ass; at first (a.k.a fresh install ) the performance was good but after a period it will get slower(same goes for vista and 7). So even if windows looks faster think that in time linux will still work constantly with no headaches from antivirus software, or viruses and so on. With the amount of space and RAM wasted by the antivirus in time, on Windows i rather run a linux game with higher settings, it makes my day.
