Football

I love football and my team. I see that Hellenic football becomes better and better.
I love it because is a sport(except programming and maths) without border. Anyone football friend here?

My team is ΑΕΚ(Αθλητική Ένωση Κωνσταντινουπώλεως-- Athlitiki Enosι CONSTANTINOPLE)

Do you actually mean “football” or “soccer”?

(Ah, more pesky discussions about terms in different languages…)

I am quite an avid soccer player myself (strictly amateur, of course), and as most Germans, I follow the →Bundesliga with great interest. My favourite team is →Mainz 05 (although born and now living in Berlin, I used to live in Mainz for several years).

In my opinion better is football. We are in European union!!!

The interesting thing is that the word “soccer” derives from
“football” (well, “Association Football”). So really it’s an
abbreviation of the full name of the sport, just like “football” is.

But like you guys in the EU, I also refer to the sport as “football”.
American Football is more like rugby (which is also a form of ‘European’
football, IIRC).

Historically, the thing that makes ‘Soccer’ = ‘football’ is that the FA
standardised the rules of the game, so the name “Association Football”
was used to differentiate the standardised game from the variants that
were played at different locations around Europe.

The history is quite interesting.

I believe I read somewhere that the earliest rugby clubs referred to themselves as football clubs. Or rather, the first ones to refer to themselves as ‘footballers’ participated in a sport which resembles much more what we today call rugby than football/soccer.

I grew up with English football on the TV and I became a Liverpool supporter, in Norway I follow Sogndal and Rosenborg.

Football has always been one of my favourite activities, in every sense.

Olav
