The fonts on my laptop don’t look so good; they’re not smooth at all. I’ve been trying many different font types but can’t find on a good set. I was wondering if anyone else running a DELL Latitude is having the same problem, if not what fonts are you using.
I’m also wondering if it could be the nvidia driver (260.19.36) causing the problem as well because I’m having a lot of issues with it. Sometimes I end up with artifacts on my screen and will have to restart the xserver to get rid of them.

do you have anti-aliasing enabled? systemsettings -> application appearance -> fonts -> use anti-aliasing
there’s some belief that you need sub-pixel hinting see OpenSUSE 11.4 and subpixel hinting
have you installed the package fetchmsttfonts? will provide MS fonts like Times New Roman, shoul load 1st time yiou do a Yast update

I have all the MS fonts: I copied them over from my windows installation. But even they were not rendered correctly. I’m trying the hinting and it seems a little better. We’ll see. By the way, which fonts do you use?
I use Sans Serif, no idea if they’re the better or why I use them (probably because they’re the default)
Try the Index of /repositories/home:/muzlocker/openSUSE_11.4 repo and install just the freetype2 rpm’s
You could start a new thread and ask which fonts people use and why, might be interesting.
You could play with the “hinting style” some say medium is better or try changing the rendering
I did. That package is actuall empty. Here’s the readme from it:
This is an empty package that installs the freetype2 library for font rendering with subpixel hinting. Install this package in order to avoid accidental removal of this feature by silently upgrading to a newer freetype2 package that does not come with subpixel hinting.
The library it’s looking for is libfreetype6 which I already have installed, although not the version it wants. I’m assuming the one I have is a newer version. I notice I don’t have freetype installed. What’s the difference between freetype and freetype2?
freetype2 library for font rendering with subpixel hinting, hinting was copyrighted and not available for use without payment. My understanding is that the copyright elapsed and is now included but I’m not positive

Don’t know, how experienced you are, but this works even for yellow-noses. There’s an instruction, how to make it support Firefox 4.
