Font rendering in openSUSE 11.1

Hi all,
I’ve been having hard time in getting the font rendering correct on
openSUSE 11.1 (GM build). I used to have verdana and tahoma fonts
configured in my gnome desktop on openSUSE 11.0. These fonts won’t work
anymore correctly. I reinstalled these fonts from my windows
partitions, ran fonts-config and still they don’t seem to appear
correctly. I also redid the configuration based on ‘Optimal Use of MS
TrueType Core Fonts for a KDE Desktop on SuSE - openSUSE’
(http://tinyurl.com/yovvc7) (my openSUSE 11.0 configuration was based on
this doc). Any idea if something is changed? (I know this is a very
open ended question without much data. I will be able to provide some
configuration files once I know what to look for…)
Basically, this is what I did.

  • Copied windows fonts to /usr/share/fonts/windows/
  • All filesnames changed to lowercase (is this required?)
  • Updated /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the line “FontPath
    /usr/share/fonts/windows”
  • Updated /etc/fonts/local.conf with the line
    <dir>/usr/share/fonts/windows</dir>
  • fonts-config and SuSEConfig (one of them should suffice???)
  • Restarted the machine.
Fonts do not look smooth at all when I use Tahoma in my
gnome-properties or OpenOffice. This was not the case earlier.
Any sort of help is appreciated…
