Can you test Firefox with GPU support disabled?
Is software-based rendering ok? Then it may be the graphics driver’s fault. Do you use NVidia’s proprietary drivers (I do) or Nouveau?
I would not be surrised that when you install newer versions of software on an upsupported version of openSUSE, you can get not functioning combinations of software.
True, but 42.3 wasn’t that different from 15.0/15.1/Tumbleweed regarding font rendering, image display or video rendering. If other programs render things ok using the libraries installed (freetype, x264, gstreamer, libjpeg etc.), then Firefox should as well.
Your observation may be correct. but OTOH it may be not. And because not many people will still run 42.3, chances are small that they experience the same (and have solved it) or are willing to test if they can reproduce it. In other words, using older, unsuported versions (of any software) might result in a very stable situation, but as soon as you start to change or add things somewhere and that rsults into problems, you may be on your own.
BTW, I like the way you try to help wth general hints on how to attack the problem and that is ingeneratl the true spriit of these forums: help when possible. But nevertheless I try to convince the OP to think over some of the negative effects of his version policy he may not have realised.
Thanks a lot for your hints but it did not work. So sooner or later I will update to 15.1 (I admit that I don’t like that procedure) and will use chrome until than. By the way, I still get updates for 42.3.
I use NVIDIA Drivers and the flaws are only in videos and addons.
