flickering video playback

I tried to play some video files from my hard drive. All of them got flickering screen when playing. In order to fix the flickering video play back. I tried the following

  1. test different video play program such as Kaffeine, VLC
  2. update the driver for my ATI HD 3450 card to the most recent available on the repository.
  3. Compile the video driver RPM package from the latest ATI driver (v8.8 released on Aug 20, 2008)

All of these were not helping the video playback.:sarcastic: I guess this would be some sort of hardware configuration issue instead of the video playback application issue. Please advice.

Have you tried playing a video dvd? How much other stuff do you have running when you try to play a video? Could be your cpu and hard drive are having a hard time keeping up. If you have desktop effects enabled try disabling it and see what happens. Bump up the buffers a bit in the apps you’re trying to play videos with and see if that helps any.

When I was playing video, only the browser was up and running. The machine should be adequate to do so (with 4GB ram, AMD Phenom 9550 and ATI HD 3450). I checked the cup usage and it was low.

When I played DVD the result was the same. I assumed the video buffer is in the Xine engine settings. However, the number will go back to default after I apply or ok and leave the setting window.

Also would that be the codec I am using? I just google search and grab some free ones. I don’t remember which one I grabbed. Is there any codec that proven working fine I can try it?

I missed one spot. The desktop effect. I created another account and don’t have desktop effect enabled. The video runs smoothly for me in that account. Looks like the desktop effect is the factor causing the flickering. Now I have to find a way to turn it off. I have hard time to turn off the desktop effect. Thank you. I think I got the answer for this caselol!

Hi. I have experienced the same thing with the ATI driver and VLC video playback. If you want to use the compiz effects and not have choppy video I have found, in VLC at least, if you check the advanced checkbox in the preferences menu, and select the output modules, video output, you can change the output type from opengl to x11 and it may resolve the flickering/choppy video with effects enabled…at least in vlc. Good Luck!

It works for me. Thank you very much

You’re welcome! Glad to hear that helped
