flgrx, sax2 - no hardware acceleration, glxinfo I do

OK I’m a bit new to this game so I will try to describe the problem coherently but WILL fail.

I’ve just installed suse 10.3 x64 and have also installed the latest ATI drivers (4.493? using the one click install business).

The driver install seamed to go OK and after a sax2 -r -m 0=flgrx and a aticonfig --initial plus the odd reboot I’m now running at the native res of my screen.

Good signs

  1. The Catalyst Control Center(CCC) works.
  2. My card is detected correctly with CCC(x1950xtx).
  3. OpenGL Provider is ATI Technologies Inc in CCC.
  4. glxinfo reports direct rendering: Yes.
  5. fgl_glxgears reports a frame rate of ~3000 FPS.
  6. Mars is in opposition with Venus…

Bad signs

  1. When I start desktop effects I’m told that my card is not configured for 3d acceleration.
  2. I start SaX2 as suggested. The Enable 3d Acceleration check box is not checked.

Ugly signs

  1. I try to check this box and then test the config. Sax2 just hangs there forever (looking at my CPU utilization 1 core is at 100%).
  2. I close SaX2 and the core is still in full use.
  3. I try to restart the machine and it wont let me (it does nothing just carries on with the session).
  4. I hard reset and try the above again but the same thing always happens without fail.

If anyone has any idea how I’m going to get SaX2 to realize I do have 3d acceleration I would appreciate the help?

Having looked at my xorg.conf I see that there is no Load “dri” directive under the “Module” section. Could this be the problem? I don’t want to randomly change things as that normally ends with me breaking xWindows.

OK I’ve added the Load “dri” line and that appears to have made SaX2 realize 3D is enabled.

I’ve enabled the 3D effects and they kind of work.

The problem is I’ve now completely lost all the window surronds so I have no little X in the top right to close them and no way to move them around, doh.

I will give v11 a burn tomorrow and see how that goes, but in the mean time if someone could shed some light on the problems I’ve been having that would be nice.

You need to study djdoo’s comprehensive xorg.conf configuration advice at Compiz Community Forums - Powered by vBulletin.

Thanks for the link. I have managed to get it working (with suse 11 that is).

i’m having a similar problem. Could you detail how you got it working with OpenSuse 11?

I have a radeon 3870 and it shows the proper driver but no 3D.

try aticonfig --initial --force
this has solved problems for me, especially when I have messed up

Ok guys,

I will PAY someone to get my Radeon 3870 card working on this new OPen Suse 11.0 install.

I have it about half way, but need help with the rest.

Forget fglrx, use the opensource driver. You will be glad you did.
