flash sound

Firefox closing after a few seconds on pages with Flash was nearly
intolerable. I keep watching for an update that could be released to fix
this, but instead, the most recent update killed the sound of pages with
flash without addressing the previously existing problem.
How do I find out what’s causing these problems? Are there log files where
the crash information is stored that might provide some clue? This and
other problems that updates create are very frustrating to the point that I
only boot into Linux any more to use my scanner. Opensuse used to be great!
It was all I used at home or at work. (I’ve given up on using it at work
where I need some level of productivity that searching for fixes to updates
doesn’t allow.) Can they stop allowing patches and “upgrades” to be
realeased that cause more problems than they address? Is it possible to fix
even my browser?
Thanks

32bit or 64bit?

What browser?

What flash, Adobe or open alternative?
( gnash etc…)

What SuSE?

What updates?

Anything that might help us help you.

some folks find that ALL their sound problems end when they uninstall
pulseaudio…

check around (use the advanced search)…

My apologies for forgetting that information after trying to decide to put
it here or in soapbox.
I’m using Opensuse 11.1 - 64bit, KDE3. The flash problem persists on KDE4.2
and 4.3. I haven’t tried it on Gnome, which isn’t installed. I’m using the
Firefox(3.0.12, 64bit) browser with no plugins or extensions other than the
Flash and mplayer plugins. Konqueror emits short buzzing noises
occasionally with the flash, so I don’t use it. It’s not youtube (I don’t
visit youtube) but radio sources like Pandora.
I would really like to fix these and other problems, but I’m not much of a
programmer and find it hard to tell if a new desktop environment or patch
is going to help or hurt before installing it. I’ve let Yast install all
the updates for Firefox and Flash that it’s listed, but it gets
progressively worse.

I’d seen the posts about Pulseaudio, but thought that it was related to
other sound problems like the mute at boot problem. I do have other sounds,
even sounds from mplayer plugins in firefox. I’ll try it though.

Removing pulseaudio worked for the flash sound. Thanks!
Is it opensuse that decides to use things like pulse or is it just a part of
KDE?

I’d still like to see if there are logs that would help me at least learn
about what’s going on. Are there logs for when a program like Firefox
crashes or doesn’t work as expected? I’ve found that some applications have
their own log that I can view with something like Nano, but not all of
them. Is there a general log of what’s going on?

i guess you new here, huh?

have a stroll through the things in /var/log where you will find some
specific logs…

you must stroll as root–do NOT log into the Linux GUI (kde, gnome,
etc) as root EVER!..instead, log in as yourself and become root as
needed [see: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Login_as_root]…like here
you can stroll with a text editor as root by:

hold down Alt and press F2
in the popup blank type

kdesu kedit

press enter and give the root pass when challenged

NOTE: the above should work if you run KDE, the following if Gnome
gnomesu gedit

in either case, be careful…do NOT change any log and save it…

i think i remember reading that stuff without a dedicated log will
auto-flow to /var/messages

have fun!
