Flash for streaming video

Hi, here’s yet another problem concerning Flash player from Adobe. I know the common solution is to downgrade to 32-bit Firefox and run Flash directly, but I don’t want to do that since my 64-bit Firefox seems to run more stable.

I have nspluginwrapper installed and can watch anything on YouTube AFAIK. But I can’t watch news videos from Yahoo.com; the plugin usually disappears after the first one finishes playing. It just leaves that rectangular space.

So is this type of video content on Yahoo of the type, .swf? Or is it some type of streaming video format? Should I be installing something else to make this work? Am I missing a Firefox setting or something?

Thanks for your help!

I installed 32-bit Opera thinking that I could use it for streaming video. I have Shockwave-Flash selected as application for .swf. But it doesn’t seem to work for this site:

News Video on Yahoo! News

The pop-up window opens, and the plugin seems to load. But no content appears. Does this rely on Java in any way?–I don’t have Java enabled in Opera (I need to figure out how to install 32-bit vm next to the existing 64-bit version). Could lack of Java be the problem?

Yeah, I guess my conclusion is that 64-bit Firefox works OK with the wrapper and Adobe Flash plugin. It’ll play anything on YouTube, but it won’t play the streaming video linked above. For that, 32-bit Java is apparently needed in conjunction with Flash; AFAIK, the 64-bit browser won’t run a 32-bit Java plugin.

As a partial workaround, I also installed 32-bit Opera. It uses 32-bit (Ice Tea) Java plugin and the same Adobe Flash plugin as Firefox. It won’t play the steaming video linked above, but it’ll play anything from this site which apparently needs both Java and Flash:

My other conclusion is that web designers are using junk technology too often. The Yahoo news links are a perfect example IMO. It would be better in pure Flash (no Java)–if they insist on using Flash at all, which is another junk technology IMO!
