Fixed: X11 update breaks KDM

Hi all…
This morning I did a periodic update - (11.1, kde 4.3)… I didn’t check what was being updated and when YaSt was finished everything stopped responding… So I rebooted and KDM would not start… I tried runnign GDM but that got stuck in an infinite loop…

I couldn’t even get into failsafe mode - just kept being dumped back to the terminal… Anyway, after digging through the logs, found messages about SETFONT and PUTFONT. The KDM logs also stated that it could not start because it found screens but they were not configured (or something similar). In the end I noticed that /var/logs/kdm.log was complaining about an error in libX11.so.6…

A
zypper wp libX11.so.6
returned

i | xorg-x11-libX11 | package | 7.4-17.10 | i586 | X11:XOrg
v | xorg-x11-libX11 | package | 7.4-1.25 | i586 | Main
v | xorg-x11-libX11 | package | 7.4-1.25 | i586 | openSUSE-11.1-Oss

so I guessed that X11 was causing the problems.

I spent about an hour messing about with zypper to see if I could change the installed version because I stupidly forgot I could change the installed version of xorg-x11-libX11 by using yast…

So I loaded yast and changed the installed version of xorg-x11-libX11 from 7.4-17.10 from X11:XOrg to 7.4-1.25 from Main… And bingo, everything worked again after a reboot.

Anyway, hope this helps anyone else who might have the same issue…

edit - **** smilies

At least you could have put computer text between

 tags, to avoid smileys there.
E.g.

i | xorg-x11-libX11 | package | 7.4-17.10 | i586 | X11:XOrg
v | xorg-x11-libX11 | package | 7.4-1.25 | i586 | Main
v | xorg-x11-libX11 | package | 7.4-1.25 | i586 | openSUSE-11.1-Oss

There is a problem to every solution ;)

Yeah, I realised that after pressing submit - but it’s a lazy sunday afternoon and after the pain this morning just trying to login to my computer I really can’t be bothered editing posts properly - sorry

Never mind. have a nice Sunday.
