I’m a newbie and I have what may be a dumb question. I want to install openSUSE 11 on my laptop (Inspiron E1705 core duo 2.0, 1g ram) but I already have windows XP Media Center installed. Is there anyway to install openSUSE without wiping out XP and all my stuff on it?
Yes.
Suse will use your free HD space, it can automatically do this, but I would partition manually.Either way, If you plan to do this I would do a defrag in XP first.
Choose new installation, use custom partitioning if you can.
In the partitioner set your xp as do not format and mount point as: /windows c
create in the free space
/
/home
swap
a grub bootloader will be installed to your MBR
if you allow suse do it all auto, it will make a suggested install. But you can end up with not much space left to play with in xp if your not careful.

Also before ever playing with partitions or OS’s make sure you have a
valid backup… just a good idea.
Good luck.

Wow, thanks a lot for such a quick response. It’s a little daunting installing it for the first time, but these forums are a great help.
Thanks again.
