I´m trying to install the boxed suse 11 product onto a “older” Dell desktop computer (256MB, 20GB, internal graphics)
Installation starts (tried KDE 4)…
but when checking possible video modes (theres a small box called “No Panic”, the display shows some coulorful pics with an “X” in the middle, then nothing happens ansymore. Monitor ist sleeping (computer not - I hope so) but nothing happens anymore. Have tried 2 times, same effect (also waiting 1.5h - looking football)
What this could be?
Im a newby (called DAU in german) with Linux
The last thing I see is: tryining to indetifier possible video modes. Then switching 3x in diffent mode (2x dark, returning to screen with the “No Panic textbox”, then coulurfull (2x, nothing to see except colours), then…thats all
Ist the downloadable version kde better than the boxed one?
What graphic card do you use ?
But if we knew the chip set of you,re graphic card it might be possible to determine if it is supported by opensuse.
What monitor did you use?

Likely not as old as a couple of Dells I have here! The current crop
includes both Optiplex GX110 and GX150 models and both give me video
problems. The GX110 models use builtin i810 video chips and after updating
the BIOS to the most recent available from Dell I can install both 10.3 and
11.0 but I still have to live with a temporarily hashed video during part
of the boot as it switches to run level 5. Supposedly, the i810 is
supported but the results are far from ideal - video streaking, hashing of
adjacent windows, etc. The GX150 has an intel 815 video and that sucker
seems to be a bastard child from nowhere - no support for it directly and
the mode updates don’t work during boot. The result is only marginally
usable with frequent video corruption. That said, these all serve my
purpose as they typically run w/o displays or keyboards and I only have to
look at them every few days. Just to test the system (and to install on
the GX150) I stuck in a Matrox 200 video card and ran with the onboard
video disabled. Curiously enough, once the installation completed I was
able to boot and switch to the internal i815 although the usability is poor
as I noted.
That may be you best path. Swap in a known supported video at least for the
installation.

Out of curiosity: did you try to use the 90 day installation support
advertised on the box?
