First Software upgrade after 13.2 install broke NVidia driver

Hello,

I was using the NVidia proprietary driver (unofficial one-click install) under 13.2 and all was well until I did a regular software update. Now X hangs after the splash screen. The log follows. It seems it hangs on: NVIDIA(0): Setting mode “NULL”. Any help would be appreciated. I’d even downshift to the open source drivers if there’s a HOWTO on that. Thanks,

Brent

What card?

You could unistall or drop back to previous driver

Boot to a terminal as root run yast

Howto: press e at boot find line starting with linux. goto the true end of the line (it is long and wraps) Put a space and a 3 at the end press F10 to contiue boot to terminal

The card is GeForce 8400GS (GT218) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0)
I’ve got it at run level 3 now (non-graphical) and can bump it to init 5 whenever I want to try something new.
I’ve tried to use the nouveau driver instead per https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/nouveau
but to no avail either. Any other suggestions?

nouveau would be the default and is already installed and is generally the default for NVIDIA cards. Problem is that you probably still have the old NVIDA driver installed and it does not work with new kernel. Proprietary stuff is not auto upgraded

Run yast and install the NVIDIA driver for that card.

Yes. If you had the nvidia driver installed in the past, it would have blacklisted nouveau. As gogalthorp says, install the correct nvidia driver.

Did yoy by accident install the latest nvidia update. What is the latest in stalled version that you’ve:

rpm -qa "nvidia*"

Is it 340.65? That it is the latest that was updated around 8 December.
