First Impressions of Open SuSE Tumbelweed 20190824

I installed Tumleweed Thursday August 27, 2019 and spent several hours downloading programs from the repositories.
I have been using Linux since 1997, and I remember buying SuSE 6.2 , SuSE 9.0, SuSE 9.1 .
Back then it was about $49.00 per Box, but I was happy to pay it. SuSE always was a technically advanced distro,
and it came with a whole lot of packages. I loved it . But a decision was made way back then, that continues up
until today. A decision was made not to include functional Music players (mp3) and functional Video players, in the
distribution, this is a decision that almost killed it. Back in 1998 you had to go to the Pacman repository and
get the programs that would allow you to play music and watch movies, and today You have to go to the Pcaman
repository, activate it, and download the programs that will allow you to listen to music and watch Videos. After 20
Years, don’t you think It’s time to change this policy. What most users ( Including myself ) want to do is install the
Linux and then listen to music and watch movies with it. After more than a decade you still can’t just Install Open SuSE
and use it to do what you want to do. The times they are a changing, and there are other advanced Linux
distributions that will allow you to do this, Why not Open SuSE ?

Hi
Patents… mp3 is part of the distribution these days so it’s only video codecs, you can all was grab the codec bundle from Fluendo…

And in any event, it takes 2 or 3 minutes to include the packman repo via Yast. A little longer with zypper because you have to look up the web address. So maybe 4 or 5 minutes.
Not much when you’ve spent 45mins or an hour installing the system.

For those reluctant to use 1-click installs: 13. Multimedia Codecs - Install Support for restricted codecs including MP3, DVD, WMA, WMV, MOV etc. Tried that with every new installation and it always worked flawlessly.
