Alright, i’m a huge noob. Now that i’ve gotten it out of the way… when i try to transfer my firmware from disc(UDF) to my /lib/firmware I get access denied… do i have to do this in root? if so… can someone perhaps explain this to me?
Yep, it’s a root thing 
open kmenu - system - filemanager - filemanager ( superuser mode ) & enter root’s password when asked. Then, open the cd & select your firmware & then copy to /lib/firmware. Personally i do it from the CLI, bit quicker for me

I ask a question too: Is there a way to upgrade the firmwire of my nec dvdrom through yast or elsewhere or sould I remove it from my box and mount it on a windows machine?

Command line interface…think terminal, it would be faster and easier to copy and paste commands, but it’s not something thats going to do it automatically.
