Firmware Test (how?)

I got a laptop from my grandma in NY after a snafu, fixed it, was told I could keep it, and I decided “why not opensuse tumbleweed?”

I download the most current tumbleweed snapshot, burnt it to a disc, and have it running atm, and after looking at the help section, there’s an option described as “Firmware Test”, and I would like to run it; only thing is, I can’t seem to find it; how do I run this firmware test, as the memory test ran and reported no problems

my laptop is an hp laptop that I plan on using when im out of town or state on business, or relaxation; if I need to post any specs of this computer, then I shall provide them when I can

Please be more specific about what you did and found.

You probably run a GUI Desktop. Which one (KDE, Gnome, …)?

Where did you see that “firmware test”? Do not forget that not all people have the same, nor do the same as you did.

im sure that I replied to this message already (with this post here I mean), so in-case its an issue on my end, ill repost what I put before

I found it when I booted straight to the install dvd of tumbleweed, and got the options to boot from hard disk, installation, etc…; it was a hotkey assigned to F1, to open a txt file showing what you could do and under installation --safe settings, there was something called firmware test, but it didn’t exactly tell me how to access it

may I receive assistance in using this test please? as I am sure any bios or firmware on my laptop/HD is as up to date as it can be, but better safe than sorry

I do not exactly understand what you are saying here. There are just two posts in this thread from you (and just two posts from you in the whole of the forums). And those are the first post of this thread and now the answer to my question for exact information. So, when you think you posted more times, those did not arrive. Something you can of course see for yourself looking at the thread.

I now understand I think) where yo see that… Somewhere in the boot screen of the installation DVD. I never used that and can not remember that anybody here reported doing this. I doubt btw if such a test can tell you if e.g. your BIOS is up-to-date. In will not have information from HP on what is the newest version of the BIOS for your system.

I would say, just forget it and install. Or wait until maybe somebody else here has an idea what this feature is for.

If all you want to do is check if the firmware is up to date, just choose to go to BIOS settings at boot. Check the date and version of the BIOS, which will be reported there.

That is, of course, if you do not see it flashed on the screen automatically at boot, which many systems do.

Then, go to HP’s support site, look up the model of your laptop, and check the software updates for the latest BIOS. If there is a newer version than the one you currently have, and you wish to update it, then follow the directions at the HP site.

Of course, if you are not having any problems, it is not necessarily a good idea to update the BIOS, as it can be a risky business. Only do it if you need to.
