when I used windows I often used Adobe Fireworks for web design. (Mostly creating text logos and background patterns)
i really enjoyed the effects you could use on texts in fireworks, with them I was able to create pretty cool text art, even though I am not really good at it.
Until now i only found pencil and gimp, but they do not have an features for effects on text neither do they have background patterns.
Any recommendations?
I think you could check out inkscape, installed by default in openSUSE 12.3, though I failed to see you mention your openSUSE version or desktop being used. Anyone that has their old software can use Oracle VirtualBox (free for individual Linux users) to to run Windows and their old applications.

I often do a search or look for the Google results for anything that is listed by

Although uneven (to be expected), there are usually thumbnail descriptions to deteremine how similar the apps are.
Just a FYI - If you’re wondering why Adobe is discontinueing so many products like Fireworks (and plenty of other big software companies are doing the same), many of the effects you’re trying to produce no longer require enormously heavy, proprietary technologies.
