I want to set up a dual homed machine as a firewall for a small (30PCs) network, perhaps making friends with openSUSE12.1 at the same time. What software should I use? Is squid in itself enough?

Squid is not a firewall, it is a proxy.

Wow, Carlos, that was profound!!! And after your 5 seconds in the limelight, we are all none the wiser.

no, we are not. only those of us, like you, who don’t know the difference
between a firewall and a proxy server. at least you could be wiser by now,
after finding out what that difference is, or by explaining better what
you want to do, what you’re trying to achieve.

You will not get much help here by that unpolite answer.

Let’s keep from making things personal, please.
Carlos is correct - Squid is not a firewall, it’s a proxy server. If
your goal is to set up a firewall, it’s going to start with identifying
the proper tools for the job.
If you want to set up a firewall, look at the SUSE Firewall module in YaST
- that’ll get you started. You’ll also want to look at
“masquerading” (aka NAT, or Network Address Translation) as part of that
configuration.
