Just wanted to ask about the firewall in openSuse 11. Does it use ipchains or iptables? or are they out of date?

Its a front end to iptables iirc ipchains is outdated, most if not all firewalls on linux are frontends to iptables.

Forget ipchains and any documentation you see regarding it. It was used in kernel 2.2 up to about 9 years ago. Since then the kernel has gone to 2.4 and then 2.6, and uses iptables.
