Firefox

I find that this browser is very unstable with Windows 8.1 and I have switched to Opera. Added to this, I find that the recent controversy over Eich at Mozilla is forcing me to consider dumping Firefox completely.

This openSUSE not windows 8.1

If you started this thread to start a debate on issues of Equality and Diversity, think again.

FYI: Firefox works fine in WIndows 8, openSUSE, Mint 16, Ubuntu 14.04 - all the system I currently have immediate access to

I have 3 win 8.1 machines and I have had to switch to opera or chrome on everyone. It appears to be an issue with flash.
It is true that firefox seems to work ok with my 3 GNU/Linux machines, but so what? Clearly the developers on that project should stick to development because opera does not crash and firefox does. Clearly Mozilla has lost focus and it begs the question why make firefox the default browser in GNU/Linux? It’s an inferior browser.

All the major distros make Firefox their first choice. It’s possible they all made the wrong choice, but the probability seems slim to me.
AFAIK both FF and opera use the same flash-player (though the flash-player differs in Linux from Windows)
Chrome on the other hand does not, but the support of some video playback is being dropped I believe by Chrome.

Firefox support for Windows is at Firefox Help

it’s easier to dump Firefox than use “help”; this issue seems to have appeared with version 28. I am now using Opera; its perfect, and faster than Firefox. The only reason I ever used Firefox over MS IE was the innovative use of tabs back with version 1.x; Like most people, I grew very comfortable with Firefox, so I have always stuck with it, but since I un-installed, I don’t miss it. On my Ubuntu laptop, I also switched out and un-installed Firefox, just for my own consistency, although Firefox does seem to work well with Linux.

That’s never prevented discussions on Windows versions in the past, either in Soapbox or Chit-Chat.

Depends on the context, doesn’t it? Since the OP provided no link re “Eich and Mozilla”, I can only guess at the intention. If equality and diversity were discussed say as the outcome of open-source development, what would be the objection in that case?

Well, I considered the opening post to be

  1. A Windows based support issue
(Though I agree, we do often discuss Windows issues)

  2. It was hinting at or leading others to comment on a recently well publicised news article
(I simply wanted to make clear. We do not want to start a discussion that could be equally as controversial as discussing something like: religion)

No prejudice was intended in my comments
And there was never any suggestion that the discussion was focussing on E&D in open source. It’s a completely different scenario.

If there are some functionality issues with Firefox in Windows, then I’d say Mozilla does need to address those. But I’m not sure it really fall in to a category of real interest in the openSUSE forum, albeit in the Soapbox.

@BSDuser
Thank you for your interest in openSUSE and I apologise if I at all seemed unwelcoming.

You are right. Firefox is the worst browser out there – except for all of the others.

For me, the other browsers crash annoyingly, while firefox is rock solid.

Okay, Opera is pretty solid too. But opera is in transition. It is moving to Webkit (or the chrome fork of webkit). But it has not moved on the linux version. That leaves opera somewhat of an orphan for linux users.

And that, I do not understand at all. So the guy takes a political position that you don’t like. What does that have to do with firefox?

At this time I also have big moral problem with Firefox.
Former Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich was in position only 10 days. He has to resign due to his opinion that bond of marriage is normal only between a man and a woman.
I am a normal man with beatuful wife and two daughters and I do not understand why somebody has to suffer for such attitude.

Thanks for the explanation. Re 1. That’s also right - not an openSUSE issue. 2. Not seen any news on it, but if controversial beliefs involved then best to be warned.

I didn’t consider for one moment any prejudice from you. Agree re no suggestion, open-source plucked from thin-air by me, just for comparison.

PS. I see from a subsequent and carefully worded post that the issue is one generally associated with many persons’ strongly-held religious beliefs. Best avoided here then.

This is not the place for this discussion. It gets into issues of
politics and religion, and regardless of any member of staff’s personal
feelings on a given issue, we wish to avoid situations where people on
opposite sides of a political or religious issue might end up saying “but
you allowed /them/ to talk about it, so not us”. Those types of topics
are divisive and we want to not be a venue for division in the community.

Thanks for your understanding.

Sorry for my English. But it is not my mother tongue.

I am sticking with Chrome. I am just a student penguin.

Not for me, Carl.

Problem still not solved on this PC and I have to use Chromium on the Forums and openSUSE sites.

And the Facebook problem (no problem to me, however, since I never go there) still exists.

Although Firefox is still my browser of choice for most other sites, they have been slowly drifting away from me through cutting out choices and options (I am especially concerned about the loss of some security options where choices could be made by the user) in the past few years.

The flash problem is strictly Adobe’s fault. It is inaccurate to blame
Firefox for it.
