firefox vs. chromium vs. ???

hello, people.

i just really need to say that Firefox sucks. (!!!)

since the last couple FF updates on my 11.0 system, and the current version on this 11.2 system, it has been seriously disappointing.
on the 11.0, there were a ridiculous number of crashes.
on this 11.2, there arent as many crashes, but the video is TRASH…trying to watch video on Hulu, for example, is like watching old school projection animation! stop motion animation! flipping through a hand-drawn animation booklet!
it is the most annoying thing. that and the ‘buttons’ on the hulu site not responding to my mouse commands when i want them to…

so, my questions are:
first, is there anything that can be done about the wacky jerky video in FF?
second, is there any other well-functioning web browser that i could use besides FF?

also, when i run video, my laptop heats up extremely. it’ll go as hot as 80 degrees celsius.

aahhh…the annoyances.

thanks again, and again, and ahead of time again, Op.Su. folk!

Don’t have any of the Firefox problems that you describe. Video/audo is excellent, no crashes, Hulu is perfect.

Instead of blaming FF, perhaps try to discover what is screwed up in your OS setup and/or hardware. Then you could possibly really fix it.

first, calm down please.

second, personally i do not use hulu, however please first of all state the plugins and the versions you are using - like flash or mplayer - that are needed for hulu. addtionally, please list your ff add ons.
you could also try to load all vids in firefox and play them separatly with your favourite video player (mplayer, smplayer, vlc) directly from /tmp (like i do…).

Do mention you system specs as well, seeing as Hulu uses flash it’s most likely not the browser that’s to blame but flash itself.

There is a new beta version on adobes site, so if you’re feeling adventurous you may want to try that. Changing browsers will most likely do you no good as all of them are using the same plugin.

…i’m extremely calm.
but very much annoyed.

my first thought is to blame FF because of my many months’ long history of being unsatisfied with its issues, which my research up until this point, has shown to be a bit common. that is, the issues besides the current video annoyance.

…using firefox 3.5.5
plugins are: adobe reader 9.1; npapi plugins wrapper 1.2.2; shockwave flash 10.0 r32; and vlc 1.0.3.

…ati radeon lw, radeon driver; 512MB ram. 55GB HD.
i’m not well versed in CLI language, yet, so if there is any more info that may help anyone help me, then please help me help you help me.

the separate vlc/smsplayer method sounds cool. but, i just installed them since upgrading to 11.2, and have not had much time to explore either. i mostly used kaffeine before 11.2, and that to me is now unusable. so, could you share any info on running the vids separately through these players…of course if you feel like it and dont mind doing so.

thanks folk…

…btw, i have not had any other graphics issues. only online video.

Right now the only browser worth using IMO other than FF is Opera.

I use Opera as my backup browser.

Chromium is a very good browser, but has it’s quirks (page layout’s not showing correctly mainly) in it’s defence though it is a Beta. Opera is a great stand-in for FF aswell (i personally have Opera as the main browser FF isnt even installed on my system) although it take’s age’s to disable all the stuff in it i have no intention of using (Widget’s/Unite getting rid of all the link’s to them). It has some problem’s with site’s and displaying them correctly (Please before anyone says “But that’s not Opera that the website’s fault”, it’s not always that way Opera is far from “perfect”).

Imo though give Opera a try, have a look at Chromium and even Arora (although some page’s again seem to render not very well in Arora). Arora is a Webkit based browser, a little like Apple’s Safari (that’s a very loose comparison).

ok.
i tried the video in konqueror, and opera…the video didnt even play/appear in konqueror. and in opera, it herked and jerked just as bad as in firefox.

so, eventhough firefox does still suck, generally, i’m thinking that i’m having a driver issue.

would anyone be willing to assist me in correcting this? i know this has been addressed in many other posts, which i am looking for and through. but, if anyone reading this knows of any specific threads that could help, according to the issues and (brief) specs posted above, it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you seen the multimedia page by oldcpu?
I don’t know what Hulu uses, but I’ve had good luck with
Opera. If I had more than one window open with Flash objects,
Failfox would crash. Opera hasn’t had that problem for some
reason.
You might have to try it with the advanced desktop features
disabled. It might help if it’s driver/hardware related.
Good luck,
-tom

ok…
so, in the firefox preferences, i changed the shockwave flash file setting from “shockwave flash (in firefox)” to “vlc”. it will not give me an option to select “vlc multimedia plug-in (in firefox)”, which i have all of the other video settings on.
…either way, the video is very very much improved. it still is not as smooth as it could be, but it is at least tolerable.

it is interesting, though, that the jerky video issue is/was primarily on hulu.com…youtube, etc., is pretty much fine. even now with the changed settings, youtube is still smoother than hulu is.

still, in spite of the above, if anyone has any information on the best ati drivers, and whether there is a better driver than the “radeon” driver i am using, please let me know!!

again, thanks for your help and input, people…

Well I don’t have much experience with ATI tbh, but as far as I know there are basically three “good” drivers depending on your card.

Radeon is the default driver for most chipsets (non-legacy and some legacy ones)

RadeonHD the one for the “HD” ATI card’s

Flgrx the ATI binary driver’s. Those afaik are for “later” series cards and can be quite a pain in the neck on a lot of distros.

OpenSuse actually have a pageHere

thanks…i somehow missed that page.
…and it seems that everything driver-wise is as good as it will get for now. i guess this means that if anything needs to get better, it will be on the order of flash support…

…cool. i’m good.

btw…over the course of dealing with this issue today, i’ve seen people posting problems about their intense frustration with opensuse 11.x, and running away to ubuntu, or ??.linux, bichn back to windows…i just dont understand. ever since installing 11.0, and running a complete linux laptop setup (using an xp desktop for backups and playing Civilization), any issues that have surfaced have been resolved usually within a day. most of these issues have been moreso annoyances than major problems.
i’m using an old Dell Latitude C640 (my mother’s old work computer), with 512MB ram and 55GB hd…nothing spectacular, right? …i just dont understand why so many people with “better” systems are having sooo many problems.
…aaaahhhhh…
thanks very much to the wonderful Op.Su. community! i would be totally nowhere. each time an issue arose, someone ALWAYS has some useful advice ready, or would otherwise work on the issue as if it was their own.
(…and kudos to me for being smart enough to choose opensuse over the other distros!)

sooooo…

4 or 5 vids with little to no jerkyness doesnt mean that the issue is solved.
…the issue is not solved.

unless someone has a suggestion, i will revert to my tried and true method of linux resolution…
…patience…
i’ll let the chameleon inside this laptop work it out…

…(!!!)
