Your thread doesn’t make much either.
Is this openSUSE 11
How are you trying to update FF?
Since the original poster didn’t reply (yet), I will, as I am suffering from the same symptom.
I am running openSUSE 11.2. I upgraded Firefox with zypper.
Now when I attempt to launch using the desktop icon I get a bouncing Firefox icon for 19-20 seconds (and Firefox appears on taskbar), then nothing. $ firefox in term gets:
Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.2.3 and 1.9.2.3. and prompt, no firefox. (posting this using Chrome, so network is functional).
zypper ps is happy
zypper ve is happy
updated Firefox using Yast (re-downloads, installs, checking deps), no change…
any ideas?
what additional info could I provide?
cheers,
Daniel
Please post
zypper lr -d
I’m crashing now, see you on the other side

Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.2.3 and 1.9.2.3.
I do believe you are on the right track. I spent some time studying ‘man zypper’ and wasn’t even able to decipher the commands you suggested…
(is the final dot in the error message significant, or is that just the period at the end of the sentence?)
Got caught in forum upgrade, so wasn’t able to login or post all day…
Obviously, some incompatible packages are installed. Any ideas on how to remove everything and start clean?
Thanks again,
Daniel
FIXED! (sort of)
Downgraded to Firefox 3.5.9. Works, complains it’s not the latest, greatest.
was:
rpm -qa |grep firefox
beagle-firefox-0.3.9-9.10.4.i586
rpm -qa |grep xulrunner
mozilla-xulrunner191-translations-common-1.9.1.9-3.2.i586
mozilla-xulrunner192-1.9.2.3-1.2.i586
mozilla-xulrunner192-translations-common-1.9.2.3-1.2.i586
mozilla-xulrunner191-1.9.1.9-3.2.i586
mozilla-xulrunner192-gnome-1.9.2.3-1.2.i586
mozilla-xulrunner191-gnomevfs-1.9.1.9-3.2.i586
now:
rpm -qa |grep firefox
beagle-firefox-0.3.9-9.10.4.i586
rpm -qa |grep xulrunner
mozilla-xulrunner192-1.9.2.3-1.2.i586
mozilla-xulrunner191-1.9.1.9-1.1.1.i586
mozilla-xulrunner191-translations-common-1.9.1.9-1.1.1.i586
Messy, very messy.
Again, thanks for your help and advice.
Daniel
The source of your trouble is likely to be the additional repos you have. I didn’t want to get in to that, as you may feel you have good reason for them. Though, ideally you should stick to the main 4:
oss. non-oss, updates, packman
1,2,4,6,7 could all be removed from your list
Not that the removal itself will fix the issues, but it’s a start.
If you really want a clean up I can help, but be prepared for a little head scratching.
Thank you again for all your attention and help.
Yes, I am beginning to see I was a bit greedy with all those repo’s. I have taken your advice and cut back to the main 4 you listed.
I am happy enough with the way things are working now, so I won’t trouble you to hold my hand for a thorough system clean up.
cheers!
Daniel
Don’t even think about system cleanup. That’s windu thinking. Take a look at the size of the installed OS, realize that that contains a lot of dekstop software as well. Leave all the libs and programs where they are: “Now that it’s no longer broken, stop fixing it”.
