following update of Firefox to version 3.6.8-1.1.1 I was eventually forced to move back to version 3.5.11 to get it working again.
Symptoms:
bouncing icon and spinning icon in toolbar for 10-20 seconds, then nothing.
Is there a special log file to be found for mozilla errors? (couldn’t find anything useful in or near /var/log/messages or warnings)
all dependencies of associated programmes seem to fulfil dependencies, but obviously something isn’t right.
Does anyone else have the same problem? Any ideas?
OS: Linux 2.6.27.48-0.2-defaultx86_64, KDE3.
System: openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64)
KDE: 3.5.10 release21.12.1
firefox files from repository “repo-update”
java: java-1_6_0-sun
Have you tried a vanilla install. It may be some of you extensions are causing the problem. I had a similar problem some time ago and resolved it by renaming my Firefox folder, starting up a vanilla version and being slow and careful with extensions.
Starting from the command line may show the errors

[solved]
for record, command line output was:
Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.2.8 and 1.9.2.8.
despite having manually forced all old versions of xulrunner out of the system
solution was found in this posting by CAF: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/applications/444756-firefox-opens-but-goes-no-where-opensiuse-11-2-64bit.html
