Firefox & Seamonkey crash on opening URLs

I recently had to repair my video driver settings (as seen in this thread: Help! Screwed up my video settings - openSUSE Forums

Now it’s working again, but…whenever I try open some URLs, my browser crashes–whether I’m using Firefox 3.5.3 or Seamonkey 2.0.

The URl where I know this happens every time* is:

Roarke, Gail

(That’s my author page. It’s a pen name.)

*The browsers have crashed this way a few times in the last couple of days, but it wasn’t util today, when I tried this one repeatedly and it crashed every time, that I realized it was specific to this URL (among others, possibly).

I can go to the site’s main page with no problem. I can open the various catalog pages (by genre, by line, etc.) with problem. I can even go directly to my titles with problem.

But if I try to access the URL above (or any particular author’s page), my browser crashes every time, without fail. Either browser. The screen goes black and then the Suse log-in page comes up. I type in my user password (which I don’t ordinarily have to do when I start the computer) and it restarts. And a terminal window opens (for my user account, not root).

I have no idea why this happening now. It never did before my video driver issues, so I assume they’re related somehow. Anyone have any idea how? Or how to fix it?

Check and see if you have gecko-mediaplayer installed, if you do remove it or switch to the version from RedDwarf
Index of /repositories/home:/RedDwarf/openSUSE_11.2

This might be your problem

Nope. I searched in YAST and it’s listed as available but not installed.

Any other ideas?

Open a terminal and type: firefox (hit enter)

Post the text from there that appears after FF crashes

I opend the terminal and typed in firefox, hit enter.

It started another instance of Firefox.

When I tried to open the URL, the screen went black, I logged in, and it restarted. A new terminal window opened, but it was blank. Not even the line where I typed firefox.

Gnome or kde

Do you know if you are using desktop effects? Can you switch it off?

Look for a file in your hidden user files .xsession-errors

Can you post it here

No, I’m not using desktop effects.

open dolphin
view hidden files
look for .mozilla
rename it .mozilla-old

All you bookmarks are in there so don’t delete it yet

Now start FF

I have no idea what dolphin is.

I opened Konqueror, found the hidden files and renamed .mozilla to .mozilla-old and started Firefox.

Tried to open the troublesome URL–it made no difference. Black screen, log-in again, shell terminal opens.

This url you are having issue with is Your own!?
Created with M$ front page

You can’t open it in openSUSE 10.3 in FF or SM

What about Konqueror or opera

It’s mine in that “Gail Roarke” is me. It’s my pen name. I didn’t create the page itself. The folks who run the website did.

You can’t open it in openSUSE 10.3 in FF or SM

What about Konqueror or opera

I don’t have Opera on my pc, but it opened just fine in Konqueror.

Try adding the user agent switcher add-on to FF and identify as IE6

Well, the user agent switcher had IE7 as the IE option. That didn’t work, and neither did masquerading as Opera.

I also get a crash on your web site using OpenSuse 10.3, KDE 3.5 and FF
3.55. Looks like something on you web page activates a bug in FF.

Well, that’s good news and bad new.

The good news is that it means there’s nothing wrong with my system. The bad news is, that means lots of people could be getting crashes when they try to look at the site.
