Firefox rendering slow, process Web Content at 100%

On all my computers, Firefox renders all map websites (Google Maps and especially the Swiss hiking map map.schweizmobil.ch) very slow and the process Web Content (in top) is always at least at 100% when using these sites. The behavior is the same when you are using webrender or not. When I use Google Chrome on these sites they load and render very quickly and also the system load is much less.

I checked to see on that site (map.schweizmobil.ch). I’ve never ever been to that site. Rendered immediately.

That particular site (map.schweizmobil.ch) renders rapidly here with firefox.

However, this does remind me that, back in 2007 with suse 10.1, everything was rendering slowly with firefox. So I installed the nvidia drivers (the hard way), and that fixed the problem.

When I use Google Chrome on these sites they load and render very quickly and also the system load is much less.

It sounds as if Chrome has better support for your hardware.

Probably worth checking that Firefox is set to use hardware acceleration…

Menu -> Preferences -> General

then under the “Performance” Section

Check that “Use hardware acceleration when available” is enabled. (Note, the performance options are only displayed if “Use recommended performance settings” is first disabled.)

Or fewer extensions installed.

This I have already tried without success, I assume that currently there is no hardware acceleration in the past these sites were working fast. Last week I tried Fedora, it was doing well but with the latest updates the problem was also here. Currently I’m using the following three machines with OpenSuSE Tumbleweed and all are showing the same behavior:

  • Workstation with AMD Ryzen CPU and AMD Radeon Graphics card with the open source drivers, X11, Plasma 5, Firefox with WebRender Compositing (makes no difference if you switch this off)
  • Laptop with Intel Core i7 CPU and Intel Graphics, X11, Plasma 5, Firefox with WebRender
  • Tablet with Intel Core i7 CPU and Intel Graphics, Wayland, Gnome 3, Firefox with WebRender

The only extension I use in Firefox is Adblocker Ultimate

Actually, verify hardware acceleration is disabled.
