Firefox loads pages extremely slowly

Since installing openSuse 11.0 last week, I’ve noticed that Firefox seems to be running extremely slow (downloading pages).

I use Lenovo 3000 N100 in a dual-boot system with XP. I previously had Ubuntu 7.04 in the same dual-boot arrangement. I never noticed a slowness problem there.

Wondering if it was really slow, I did an experiment, comparing the page download times on the XP side (also using Firefox) with those I’m getting under openSuse.

To: //// XP time: [INDENT] Suse time:
nytimes.com :05 // :20
Google search :02 // :11
back to nytimes <:02 // <:02
NYT Technology :02 // :25+ (loading icon kept spinning)
NYT/Tech/story :02 // :20
cwru.edu :09 // :40
whitehouse.gov :05 // :11

It also took :22 to get to the openSuse forum page and another :15 for the login page to open.

Same wireless card;same router/AP; same modem (DSL).

Could I have some settings wrong? (I have all the updates downloaded and installed.)

Thanks.

Have you disabled IPv6 as mentioned in other threads in this forum?

Good luck.

This seemed to work. (Followed steps in the thread
FireFox go slow on 11.1 - openSUSE Forums.)

Is there any explanation anywhere as to why this needs to be done in this situation but not in general (with other distros; with Firefox in XP;…)?

XP does not use IPv6. It is available after a certain SP, but even then, you have to add it to your network stack. Even if you do add it to XP, it is unsupported by most ISPs.

Why does FF enable IPV6 when most ISPs don’t support IPV6 (for now)? This default setting is a problem for every LinuxBeginner …

So is there an easy (non-geek) way to turn it off for the whole computer–would that help my other internet activity (mail, in particular)?

This has come up several times in the forums, which is why it was
suggested so quickly. Search through them, or you can probably find it
via Yast: Network Devices: Network Card and then head on into that
section of Yast for the details.

Good luck.
