Is there any way of changing the language of Firefox (menus, etc)? I mean without downloading it from mozilla.com.
well, the only way really is to get add-ons, either from the Tools>Add-Ons menu selection or addons.mozilla.com … which is really the same thing. Firefox itself, does not come with any other language pack, since installing add-ons is the easiest thing in the world.
Edit: One more way, even though it’s still from mozilla …
YaST2>Software>SoftwareManager>Search=“firefox”>install MozzilaFirefox-translations … but again, it’s provided by mozzila
Thanks for your fast answer. I downloaded and installed from mozilla.com the version in my language and the extensions and themes apparently worked fine, but the same didn’t happen with Flash and Java. I tried manually to repair it but I am afraid I am not so skilled. How could I make Flash and Java run with my language version of FF? Thx!
Flash and Java are not parts of FF. The same Flash and Java run with e.g. Konqueror, so your question should not be about FF at all.
And for Flash and Java, they are programming languages/environments. IMHO it is not Flash and Java that you see having a language, but the application that uses these things (exept from e.g. the menu you get in Flash on a right click inside the window).
I have e.g. a dutch FF (or Konqueror, both work of course), and on a certain web site that runs a Flash application, on right click the menu is in english, but the whole of the application talks dutch to me because it is written like that.
I cannot give a certain answer right now, I’m at school on a mac, but in a computer programming class… I’m developings classes for java right this moment, and I’m sure there is a way to make java translate, not sure about flash though. I’ll come back in several hours.
Of course I know that Java and Flash are not part of FF. They work just perfectly with my Konqueror and my FF. The difference is that when I change the language selection in KDE4, Konqueror also changes the language (it’s part of KDE!), but not FF…so if I need FF in another language I should download it from mozilla.com…Ok, I did that, uncompressed the file, and started using it: themes and extensions worked fine but not Java and Flash, that’s it. I guess the problem must be with the location of the /firefox folder or something like that, but as I said before, I am not very skilled and failed doing it. Thanks for your help anyway
If you start firefox from the command line you can specify the language
using the LANG environment variable. For instance, if you want German:
$ LANG=de_DE firefox
I just installed the MozillaFireFox-translations package from the OSS repo, but maybe your language is not included.
OK I managed to do it. This is how it can be done.
1.Go to the Firefox (Mozilla) download page and choose your language, you will get a .tar.bz2 file.
-
Uncompress it wherever you prefer, let’s say you choose /home/yourname/. You will have a folder called “firefox” and within it another one called “plugins”. In this example the complete path will be /home/yourname/firefox/plugins
-
Now go to the directory /usr/lib/browser-plugins. Copy all its content to the folder /home/yourname/firefox/plugins
-
Now in the properties of the firefox icon, adjust the path to the firefox executable file: /home/yourname/firefox/firefox
It worked fine for me, java and flash included. This way you will have the original version from the openSuSE repos in /usr/lib/firefox , and the one in your another language in your home directory.
