What Firefox version are you running?

I’m running Firefox 3.0.3 under OpenSUSE 11.0 and KDE. It crashes randomly, simply disappearing from the screen. When I restart it, it asks if I want to restore the crashed session. There are no clues in /var/log/messages.

It also sometimes hangs in a wait state. The only way to get rid of it is “killall firefox”.

Ironically enough, this is my second attempt to post this message. Firefox crashed on my first attempt.:frowning:

I am having the same experience(s). Firefox 3.03 hangs repeatibly when downloading files via web links and randomly when just surfing. A gnome close window will not work, you need to kill the firefox process. I am running openSuSE 11 2.6.25.18-0.2-pae kernel. All openSuSE patches have been installed.

Any suggestions on how to capture debug info to help find the problem?? It sounds like FF 3.05 has the same issues.

Mine does too even just opening a flash video. The latest firefox update last night seems to help with the flash issue. I have not try in the downloading side.
For surfing it looks working fine, I haven’t had a problem since last night.

I wonder if this is a Firefox bug or an OpenSUSE bug. I haven’t encountered it under Kubuntu. And I don’t know how to get any useful debug information either, since /var/log/messages is not helpful.

It is likely neither. Firefox 3.0.3 runs reliably on openSUSE 11.0 on my x86_64
system.

What do you find in directory ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash\ Reports/? Given the
name, I would expect useful info there.

Larry

This is happening to me, too…specifically when I go to blogs with flash video embedded from youtube or other hosting sites on the web. Here is as much as I could get of the bug report:

It’s doing it in Opera, too…are there any packages or repositories I need to add to fix this?

I am having the same problem. In my case after a few crashes it shouts down and won’t restart. In fact, other programs will not start including games, Gimp, and Thunderbird. Opera will install and run, but I hate it.

What I have to do is delete the .kde profiles and start over.

Just finished setting it up again and I only installed a few extensions. I suspected AdBlock Plus so I uninstalled it. So far so good. All I have now is WOT, Secure Login, Flashgot (could be the culprit) TabMix Plus (also could be the culprit) and PDF download. I have about 10 themes downloaded to see if it was theme related. So far I can’t see where it is theme related.

From the posts above it appears to be flash related. That would be my guess anyway.

If anyone has found anything else please post.

Thanks.

Here’s what I should have done: copy the contents of ~/.mozilla to a backup directory, then delete ~/.mozilla. I neglected the first step and so I lost a lot of stuff I would have preferred to keep – but Firefox seems to be working fine now.

I think the problem was that some configuration files, particularly the ones relating to plugins, were left over from an older version, and Firefox was utterly unable to cope with that situation.

Just thought I would say I have noticed this with Firefox 3.0.4 - the default version with openSUSE 11.1 my firefox crashes everytime I try to visit NFL.com - Official Site of the National Football League. I doubt this is a corrupted cookie or something since I have only been on long enough to visit about 3 websites but so far everytime I try to visit nfl.com firefox will crash.

I did not see anything in ~/.mozilla/firefox that looked like a crash report. This is happening with a fresh install of 11.1 32bit and Firefox 3.0.4 - no installed software that did not come from the DVD.

Works fine from here to a point.

nfl.com does seem to drop off the map every now and then if I leave the home page open and I have to refresh the address.

Could it be down to the media player or codecs on the page though?

I have loads of different codecs installed including the Novell moonlight so maybe you just need to install more

Whoops, sorry just realised i am also using FF3.0.5 maybe an update to this might also help?

Thanks! After I installed a codec pack NFL.com is no longer crashing Firefox.

I have been seeing some behavior that perhaps is related. While Firefox occasionally crashes form me, what I see more often is that it becomes unresponsive. When I use top, I see that Firefox is using close to 100% CPU. Based on some of the posts in this thread, I decided to start shutting off add ons and plug-ins. I had two flash plug-ins (two different versions, apparently), and when I disabled them, Firefox went down to expected levels of CPU usage (in the single digits), and has stayed there over a day of usage. Looks to me like flash is the problem, although I should probably go through a re-enable everything else to make sure.

Both Firefox 3.0.5 and Opera 9.3 visiting oprah.com crash. Is it possibly something to with Suse? I’ll go over to another distro and try the same.

40% browser crashes are related to flash. Deal with it.

I started firefox from a command line so I could see the messages it was generating. This shows up repeatedly:

(npviewer.bin:17202): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_destroy: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widge t)' failed
*** NSPlugin Viewer *** WARNING: unhandled variable 17 in NPN_GetValue()

npviewer.bin is part of the package nspluginwrapper, whose package description says this:

nspluginwrapper is an Open Source compatibility plugin for Netscape 4
(NPAPI) plugins. It enables you to use plugins on platforms they were
not built for. For example, you can use the plugins compiled for i386
in Mozilla on Linux/x86_64 or other architectures.

Since I’m running on an x86_64 system, I suspect the problem lies in nspluginwrapper.

I recommend You to use the “Alpha” version of flash (which works flawlessly for me and i never had a crash because of that) and also the 64 bit Java works without a hitch.

When installing 64 bit plugins to firefox i recommend uninstalling nspluginwrapper. It helped for a friend of mine. If You got any questions how to install them just ask here.
