Firefox and Konqueror crash in openSUSE 12.1

Hello All,
Did a fresh install, DVD, of 12.1.
Install went OK, but now there are the following problems:
1)Must boot with VGA=NOMODESET, otherwise NO GUI.
Once finished the result is graphically far from desirable.
Tried modification of /etc/11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf with Driver “intel” and “intellegacy”, no luck
BTW this problem was already in 11.4 - no solution then - thus back to 11.3 where all worked fine.

2)Firefox AND Konqueror both crash when executing a URL input, resulting in presentation of the Login screen.

Network connections, wired and wireless, are functional, can do online updates, etc. the only thing is is NO Internet Browser functionality.

Hardware:
Laptop eMachines E527-2437
CPU: 900 Intel Celeron
Graphics: Intel GMA 4500M

Hopefully somebody has a solution to this.
Thanks.

1: What desktop are you using? (KDE, Gnome, etc)
2: Does it crash for any URL, or just some specific URLs? If the latter, can you give a URL that causes the crash, so that we can test.
3: Is there anything else special about your system that might be involved?
4: Have you checked for memory errors lately?

I used “nomodeset” on my laptop for most of the time it was running 11.4, and I never had a crash. This was with KDE, though I think I also tested with Gnome and XFCE.

Wise Penguin:
1: KDE
2: All URLs
3: Nothing special, just the standard install.
4: Memory OK.

Did not crash in 11.4, only the annoying “nomodeset” issue.
Thanks for your response,
Dick Davis

I booted one of my systems using “nomodeset”. I tried the browser. It worked just fine.

Maybe try creating a new firefox profile, and see if that helps. Or just rename your current profile directory to something else, and create an empty directory to replace it. That should give a clean new profile, and you can later rename the old profile back to its original name if you want to restore it.

Wise Penguin,
Thanks for the tip. Will try it later today. Am at work right now. Will keep you posted.

Wise Penguin,

Tried your suggestion, but the results are the same:
Start Firefox → Reboot
Start Konqueror → Reboot
An error message flashes across the screen, but it is too fast to grab it, let alone reading.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Dick Davis

Not really. This seems to be peculiar to your system, since there are no similar complaints.

When the system next reboots, you can try entering ‘1’ on the kernel parameter line at the grub menu.

That puts you in single user mode. After booting is complete, it will prompt for the root password.

Give the root password. Then cd to your own home directory.

less .xsession-errors

While in less, you can use the “G” command (just the letter G) to scroll to the end of the data. See if there is any error message there that indicates what is happening.

You might also look in “/var/log/messages” to see if anything relevant was logged (you don’t have to wait for the next reboot to check that).

Wise Penguin,

Did as you suggested. More errors than I expected. Most of them related to graphic capabilities. Nothing pointing to Firefox or Konqueror.
Will do a new fresh install. See what happens. Will keep you posted.
Thanks for your tips.

Wise Penguin,

Reinstalled 12.1 with KDE. Boot with “nomodeset”. All graphics work fantastic when in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf the driver is set to “intellegacy”, with the exception of the browser. Bringing 50-device.conf back to its original state reduces the graphical capabilites, like desktop effects and the rendering of true-type fonts, but the Firefox work.
Any suggestion?
Graphics is Intel GMA 4500M.
Thanks,
Dick Davis.

You pretty much have to do what will allow everything to work, even if that results in reduced graphical capabilities.

I have problems with a newer Intel graphics, such as the system freezing. So I probably also have to give up on some of the graphic capabilities to avoid the freezes.

For the nomodeset necessity, refer to http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/hardware/468893-graphics-drivers-intel-intergrated-graphics-3.html#post2414132, and post results back.

For the Firefox/Konqueror crash (failure resulting in return to login screen, the possible reason is a failure in Xorg. Re-boot at that login screen, and examine Xorg.0.log.old, using

kdesu kwrite /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

At or near the end, you should find messages indicating the failure in X. If possible, post the contents of Xorg.0.log.old.

BTW: you said “*… can do online updates, etc. the only thing is is NO Internet Browser *” in your post. How did you post the message without a browser ?

Busy Penguin,

Thanks for the tip. Here is ta snippet of Xorg.0.log.old:

Thanks and sorry for getting back to you so late,

It seems that you may have a variation of bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=704052 (q.v.).

First to do: from the link I posted earlier, re-read entry http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/hardware/468893-graphics-drivers-intel-intergrated-graphics-3.html#post2414834, and do the steps therein. This will get rid of any “intellegacy” entries for Xorg.

Next: Re-read entry http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/hardware/468893-graphics-drivers-intel-intergrated-graphics-3.html#post2414132, and perform the steps therein. This will test the ability of KMS (q.v.) on your PC.

Post back your findings.

I’m having the same issue for a specific URL

http://www.elakiri.com

both browsers (Firefox and Konqueror) clashes when browsing this site.

When you state “having the same issue”, are you referring to the title of this thread ? The initial URL in Firefox is accessed satisfactorily, as in Konqueror. Konqueror subsequently crashes with a seg fault in kdeinit4, ending the browser. I did not pursue the issue further in Firefox, as the web site is littered with many javascripts that I have blocked.

However, the URL in question does not cause the crash in X, leading to a return to the login screen.

Please provide further information as to the nature of the problem you are experiencing. If your access to the URL does not crash X (as described in this thread), you should open a new thread. In any case, please include your hardware (in particular, the graphics specs), oS versions, desktop (KDE or Gnome or ?) and Firefox version.

i have this problem too. i faced with this problem after installing nvidia driver.
