Firefox 9.0, script not responding

Hello. On “The Daily Show” website, I see “script (name) not responding”. I click cancel again with each new message(repeating). Sometimes it will finally allow me to watch a video. Other times, firefox freezes after about the 5th time.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - Political Comedy - Fake News | Comedy Central

I have my system updated as of this post. Can someone help?

So I guess I am not seeing this problem using Firefox 9.0.1 though the Wild Turkey Whiskey commercial was interesting, as was the first video I watched. So, like most things, there is more to it. Java and flash can differ between openSUSE versions for instance. Can you tell us about your openSUSE installation, Desktop used and if you have checked out your multimedia lately?

MMCHECK - Version 2.41 - Check Your Multimedia in 16 Steps - Bash Script File - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

I got openSUSE 11.3, 11.4 and 12.1 along with (mostly) KDE and some GNOME loads. So I will go to the setup that is as close to yours as I can and see if the problem is there.

Thank You,

I used the muli-media one-click install. This one I believe:

Restricted formats/12.1 - openSUSE Community Wiki

I have Suse 12.1 - KDE installed. I know how to save the info on the yast for installed software. Do you need javascript debugging? I have all the latest updates. What do you need?

So, if you have never used the Free bash script called mmcheck, why not run it through its tests to see if there is anything missing. Now Java can no longer be obtained from Sun/Oracle as its not in the openSUSE 12.1 repositories. I have not used the sit you give to setup my codecs, but no matter the way, you still need to confirm what you have installed.

Gee whiz, don’t you have noscript to sort through all that?

If you do the one that matters is to add mtvnservices.com

?-)

I found it needs more. anyway… This just got harder.

I did complete reinstall of suse to fix the problem. It fixed that, but now it crashes on shutdown(see other message). I should be able to update repos in yast. They are gone. I renamed .kd4 and to stop the crash. It didn’t work and now the repo update in yast doesn’t show for packman. Do I need to do clean reinstall of suse? How? I used the one-click muli-media install.

So doing a upgrade to openSUSE 12.1, if that is what you did, is not recommended by myself and seems extreme to fix a web browser problem. Doing a OS upgrade is an option and it most often ends with a copy of openSUSE that boots are starts up, but may leave mixed application versions and orphaned applications. My normal suggestion is to do a clean install, but you only mount and do not format the /home area, leaving all of your application settings. You must reload all previous applications, but once loaded, they use your existing personnel settings. As for why you are having the problem in the first place, we never got to the point to figure that out.

Thank You,

If I have an mswin problem, I try to fix it. If not, I reinstall the OS. (I can’t afford tech support.) Sometimes I forget I have it on suse. Thanks to all here.

I used the upgrade install from v11.4 –> v12.1 (last to current). That’s where I all the problems started. I usually do a clean install.

I did a clean install of suse 12.1(see install post). I installed all the yast updates. Using one-click install, I installed nvidia drivers then multi-media. Next, I installed Firefox add-ons:
adblock plus –> better privacy –> noscript

Noscript seems to be the problem.

Noscript seems to be the problem.

So if you resend this option, does all work properly then?

Thank You,

AD Block Plus and Noscript are causing it. If I disable them, it works, but I have to put up with ADSPAM. Else, i’ll wait for the bug to be fixed. If I enable either one, I get “script not responding”.

I check “cancel script” and don’t show this message again, but same URL appears over and over again.

Maybe. My usual FF addon set is Noscript, Adblock, Ghostery and TACO.
they all play nice together. Maybe Betterprivacy is fighting with
NoScript?

The authors of both those add-ons are very responsive to bug reports, in
my experience. If you have details that will let them reproduce your
problem, I’d suggest reporting it to them - it’ll get fixed faster that way.

Both AD Block Plus and Noscript are causing this script bug. I’ll post later when I know more.

I think it’s a noscript bug. I’ll send email to them.

Solved it.

You need to uninstall firefox and delete the hidden “.mozilla” folder. Then reinstall firefox and do the updates. Some scripts are used to switch to previous weeks of TDS. So, you’ll need them to enable them too. Just add one at time until it works.

Standard Diagnostic:

Standard diagnostic - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

It worked for that boot. The next boot it started up. It’s now up to 15 times totals to view one video. If I switch to another video, it get it 5-7 more times. :stuck_out_tongue:

Before this script window popup, it freezes firefox(9.0.1). After 20+ times, window popup says "‘script unresponsive’ window is not responding. – terminate or cancel –
