Almost immediately thereafter, I began experiencing repeated crashes on a variety of websites (text, video, others). There doesn’t seem to be any pattern other than a page with the message, "Gah! your tab just crashed . . . " and an offer to restore the tab, which doesn’t always remedy the problem. A brief search of the web (and the opensuse forums) didn’t yield anything that either worked or I could use. Downgrading to earlier versions of Firefox didn’t help either.
Please note that I have not made any changes to my system – absolutely no changes to the Leap 42.3 OS or Firefox (no new additions, etc. to Firefox, no new apps installed). Nor is this a hardware issue (at this moment, 4 GB free physical memory). Having used Firefox (and its predecessor Netscape) for well over twenty years without incident, this behavior is quite puzzling.
Hi
An easy way to check if it’s system wide or user based is to create a fresh test user account, login and test Firefox to see if it duplicates your issue. If not then it may be an add in or your firefox cache/database.
Not to be obtuse, if the system is working until an update is applied and then malfunctions following the update, I don’t see how my configuration is a factor.
Hi
It could be a subtle change with something like an add in, it’s just an easy way to confirm, with a fresh firefox cache/database etc. It can also eliminate/confirm if it’s a system issue or a user issue.
I went through this recently with my webhosting company, who insisted that website rendering errors were caused by something I did. After inquiring at the server software developer, it turned out they had a bug in their latest release.
If this issue persists, I will consider taking it directly to Mozilla.
First verify this is not some configuration problem by testing a test user account. Old configs can cause problems for new software. Also stop any addons to be sure that those are not the source. Then and only then if problem persists report to developers.
there are many reasons why a firefox tab might crash seeing how not all of us are having crashes it’s safe to assume it’s something on your end either hardware or software related
what kind of graphic card do you have and what drivers, Firefox is known to have issues with noveau on nvidia chips and has hickups on some older intel chips
but the simplest thing to try is run firefox in safe mode (ie with no add-ons) hit the hamburger buttom->help->restart with add-ons disabled
if there’s no crashes it’s an addon if you’re still getting crashes try a fresh profile (you can use a fresh Linux user account or create a new Firefox profile with the -p switch)
etc.
you can also start Firefox in a terminal and look at the error messages if/when it crashes …
