FireFox 5.0 - Flash Player not functioning

Hi all,

I use openSUSE 11.4 64 bits, KDE, FireFox 5.0 for browser.
Graphics card : nVidia GeForce 9500 GT.

However, when I want to see embedded movies, e.g. in my newspaper, or looking for a hotel, either I get the message : you have no flash plug-in installed, or I get a black screen with a cross in it.

Before that I tried to :

sudo zypper rm pullin-flash-player flash-player nspluginwrapper

followed by :

sudo cp ~/Downloads/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib64/browser-plugins/

I also followed the links indicated by FireFox for the missing plug-in which eventually resulted in :

FireFox finished installing the missing plug-ins
Adobe Flash Player installed

In FireFox->Edit->Preferences->Applications
I can see for the Content type : Shockwave flash file use Flash-Player (default).

However, nothing seems to be functioning.
How can I install Flash player correctly, please ?
Thank you very much,
W

What I forgot :

So I have the nVidia GeForce 9500 GT, 2D driver = nouveau; 3D driver : swrast (No 3D Acceleration) (7.10.2))

I suggest you might look at this thread on the subject:

Fix your flash in 11.4 _64 with flash square - Page 6

As a nVIDIA owner, I look at this as well:

Installing the nVIDIA Video Driver the Hard Way - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

Firefox 6.0 is out, if you add the Mozilla Repository for your version of openSUSE, you can upgrade that as well:

Additional package repositories - openSUSE

I have no problems using Flash 64 bit with Firefox 6, the latest Flash 64 and the most recent nVIDIA driver installed the hard way.

Thank You,

Hello,

Thank you very much for your elaborate answer.

I executed the bash script for the Flash Player. Everything ran smoothly, but there still seems to be a probleem with FireFox - Flash movies do not play.

I wanted to upgrade to FireFox 6.0, so I added the repository in YAST, executed the update manager. Alas nothing changed. I still work with FireFox 5.0. YAST does not seem to grab the 6.0 version.

I downloaded the nVidia files, but do not dare yet installing them.

I’d first like to install FireFox 6.0 properly and then the Adobe Flash PLayer.

So, your help is very much appreciated.

Thank you,

W

So, you need to make sure you have added in the Mozilla repository. You can open up a terminal session and run the following command:

zypper repos

When I run this command using my script called mmcheck, here is what I get:

2 . Display All openSUSE Repositories as Entered in your Computer ...

Command: zypper repos

If you have more than nine total repositories listed above, you could cause yourself
some trouble. In general, repositories must be given a priority when you have
more than nine. If you do not understand how this works, please ask for help.
Listed below are the recommended repositories you should keep in YaST. (?=Version)

 1) Packman-1 - http://packman.jacobs-university.de/suse/openSUSE_11.?/Essentials/
 2) Packman-2 - http://packman.jacobs-university.de/suse/openSUSE_11.?/Extra/

I highlighted the Mozilla entry. To upgrade when this is present, do the following:

Goto YaST / Software / Software Management (You must enter your password to start YaST).

Then, in Software Management I do a:

  1. Options / Allow Vendor Change (Place an X there)
  2. Package / All Packages / Update if Newer Version Available (Agree if there are several Packages to update)
  3. You will then be presented with your choices to remove the conflict. I most likely would remove the file dbus-1-devel.i586 or change its vendor, but I don’t know what else this might cause or why your have this problem.

I normally make the following suggestions to all that have such problems:

To avoid package problems, the most important thing to do is to: NEVER ignore a dependency, even if YaST/zypper/updater gives you such an option! In general, never switch to an >inferior< architecture and the solution is most often to just switch Vendor to the >Packman< repository. So changing the vendor is OK, but >ignoring< dependencies is never a very good idea!

Thank You,

Hello,

Thank you already for this answer.

When I type

zypper repos

I get this answer :

3 | Updates-for-openSUSE-11.4-11.4-0 | Updates for openSUSE 11.4 11.4-0 | Yes | Yes
4 | libdvdcss repository | libdvdcss repository | Yes | Yes
5 | openSUSE-11.4-11.4-0 | openSUSE-11.4-11.4-0 | Yes | No
6 | repo-debug | openSUSE-11.4-Debug | No | Yes
7 | repo-debug-update | openSUSE-11.4-Update-Debug | No | Yes

9 | repo-oss | openSUSE-11.4-Oss | Yes | Yes
10 | repo-source | openSUSE-11.4-Source | No | Yes

I executed YAST already three times, but I still have no FireFox update.

it might be worth starting yast and going to the software manager. then click on view then repositories. click on the moxilla rep and then select the ‘switch system packages’ - which is above the entry in blur writing

Lo and behold, so it did!

My first problem - correct upgrading of FireFox - is now solved, thanks to the help of both of you.

My second problem remais unsolved : how can I view or visualise YouTube or other (e.g. in my newspaper) embedded films ?

While in FireFox :

Edit-> Preferences -> Applications -> ShockWave Flash File I point to Use FlashPlayer (Default).

However, nothing happens on my screen, on the contrary : I get a white (or blank) rectangle in the place where, before I clicked to launch the film viewer, I saw the first image.

Thanks for any clue.
