Firefox 3.5 Drag favicon to Desktop for URL Link

Hi! I am running Firefox 3.5, on Linux with KDE.

When I drag the favicon from the location bar to the KDE desktop a text file is created. I want a url link.

I’m also running XP and FF 3.5. If I drag the favicon from the location bar to the Windows desktop, it is created correctly. I’ve done a great amount of googling but have not found a solution. Drag-n-Drop seems to work for some people, and doesn’t for others. I’m not sure, it might be working for Gnome desktops.

I’ve used an addon in the past to circumvent this problem and get a solution. It provided a right-click to the context menu. That fine, but it would be nice to figure it out and not use another addon if I don’t have to. Do I need to add a mimetype in firefox (Menu > Edit > Preferences > Applications? If so, what would it be? Or, do I need to set something in the KDE environment?

When I drag-n-drop the favicon on the desktop, a dialog comes up with the title KDesktop. How do I tell KDesktop it’s a url and not a text file?

Thanks much!

I can’t think why you would want to do that, but whatever.,…

The Desktop in KDE under 11.1 and assuming you mean kde4, is NOT a desktop as you know it. And I have to assume you are using folder view as drag to deskop for me would only work in folder view.

Surely you would be better with properly configured bookmarks. I have literally hundreds of links I need quick access to and I wouldn’t want them all over the desktop. There is not 1 icon on my desktop.

Argh :frowning:

My bookmarks are organized. I’ve found over the years, for me (mileage may differ), because of the ephemeral nature of the Internet, I’ve opted to go with fewer sites, and then google, bing, icerocket, yahoo… for the most “current” information.

I should have added I’m 10.3 SuSE and KDE 3.5. I thought perhaps FF SuSE folks that also could not get this feature to work, would probably be KDE 3.5.

It’s a feature that comes in handy for specific work related tasks. I had to do similar googling to find out how to get send link to work correctly (which I did). The solution for 2.19 was different than 3.5 and I was able to get rid of some customization. Yeh  I was just wondering if I could learn something new and fix something that is suppose to work, but does not.

Thanks though.
